Alcohol or no?

Are you serving alcohol at the 1st bday party? I had it at DS's, but literally only one person drank it. I didn't have it at a couple other ones, then it seemed like people were looking for a glass of wine. I know it's not necessary, but does it look cheap to skip it? DH's response was that he would want a beer, lol. But I feel like it's hard to offer beer without wine.

  • We are going to offer it.  We are going to have a really casual party.  We'll have a football game on the TV and it will be just our family and a few close friends.

We'd have a riot if there were no booze. H's family loves a party! So that's a yes.

We are having a backyard party and have a few couples without children that we are inviting, so we will have alcohol. Nothing big, I am going to set up a little bar with beer, Mike's hard lemonade, and wine.

  • heck yes. The party we are throwing is more for us than DD.  Plus people would start thinking I was pregnant again if we didn't have booze.

  • The restaurant is BYOB, so we're going to bring bottles of both red and white wine. By word of mouth, I was also going to spread the word that people are welcome to bring their own if they want something specific. We don't have a lot of big drinkers, so I'm not too worried about it getting out of hand.

  • Good question.  My MIL makes a killer blackberry sangria.  MIL and SIL's both love to drink, so I could definitely see her making a pitcher.  If she does, that is not a problem with me.  I just worry about one SIL getting drunk and making a fool of herself (which she usually does 99.9% of the time).

  • We will probably provide a little as DH's family likes to drink but we won't be drinking as we have a post-party 6-hour drive home :-q
  • We won't be, but we're just doing cake and ice cream at night.  Plus, my dad is an alcoholic and he's really making an effort to not drink while around our family, so to offer it with him invited would be a recipe for disaster.

  • We will have wine and beer. We are having her party later in the afternoon/evening, so we will probably have something stronger for after the kids go to bed.

  • Thanks, ladies! Sounds like it's pretty common to offer it. Guess we'll do beer and wine and maybe an interesting mixed drink. If the wine doesn't get consumed, it will keep.

Same with us.  I think we're just having beer, though.  My MIL mentioned wine, but if she wants it she can bring it.

  • It's going to be a BYOB.  The in-laws drink but my family does not.  The in-laws have no problem with bringing their own. We're only inviting family.  I want to keep this party as small as possible.

  • Both sides of our families drink so yes.
  • I know this is a cultural thing, but I can't imagine any family event or even weekend get together with alcohol. Everyone on both sides of our family drink, except my MIL.

I've only been to one wedding where they didn't serve alcohol. It was still a blast, but we hit the bar for a cocktail when it was over.

  • We won't be. Neither of our families had alcohol at kids parties growing up. DH has some cousins that are pretty bad drunks (arguments, physical fights) so that's another reason we won't have it. We didn't serve it at DS party either.
  • Our families don't drink so we don't do alcohol for family things.
  • Yep, alcohol will be served. My family enjoys drinking socially, so it's rare we have a get together with no booze.
