NBR: So I don't hate my summer job

I am working as a nurse at a summer school program for kids with special needs. One of the young 'uns lost his bathroom privileges so he is required to use the one in the nurse's office. He is non verbal and comes in with his aide who always looks a bit harried. So I have been working here since the first week of July and have seen him multiple times a day every day since.

Today, I hear him coming down the halls. He is repeating "Hi nurse bathroom" over and over. Finally, he comes into the clinic and says "Hi nurse!" really loud then mutters "bathroom" under his breath. His aide explained that he wanted to say hi to me since July, but couldn't figure out how and has been rehearsing "Hi nurse bathroom" for weeks. He didn't need to use the bathroom. He just wanted to say hi.

Why can't I just work here forever?! Also, I have a student who comes down for a daily medication after lunch and today is the last day I will see him. He has come by about 6 times today to ask all sorts of questions ("How does this thing work?" holding up a stethoscope, or "Can you take my blood pressure?", or "Do these things have needles?" pointing at the Epipens on the wall). I think he is going to miss me...and I am definitely going to miss him. While this has been the best summer job and reassures me that I do actually like being a school nurse, it just makes me dread my real job even more. Boo.

Re: NBR: So I don't hate my summer job

  • Part of my responsibilities this summer have been training and supporting an adaptive rec summer camp. Those kids are the best. The smiles on their faces just make my day!

Glad you are having a great summer working, I know a lot of people on here aren't too happy in work right now :/
