Cloth Diapering

Alvas and skinny legs

I bought my CD stash while pregnant. About 75 percent of my newborn stash and 95 percent of my one-size stash is Alvas. I got them through a Facebook coop because they were so cheap and I heard good things about them. Except DS was born like his daddy: long and very skinny. My newborn Alvas always leak or blowout! I'm worried one size Alvas will just do the same thing. The leg holes are simply too big. Has anyone else ran into this problem? Did you find a way to make the Alvas work, or did you just have to find a different diaper? What brand would you recommend for a skinny baby?

Re: Alvas and skinny legs

  • Have you tried twisting the tabs on the NB alvas? We had trouble getting a good fit with the aplix, but could get a good fit with the snaps. The alva colorsnaps started fitting fairly soon, and OS alvas have just started to fit this week, at a little over 4 months.

We've been using BGs, kawaii PnNs, and alva colorsnaps.

I've been able to get the bigger diapers (Kawaii one-size) to fit my skinny guy by 9 weeks (11 lbs) by pulling up on the tucked in front edges of the diapers after they have been fastened.  This shrinks the leg holes down a lot.  It does look a little funny, though.

I second the bumGenius and Flips for skinny legs.  Here is a picture of my skinny guy in bumGenius for the first time.  It kind of shows how much you have to pull up on the front to tighten the legs.

  • I think the NB Alvas are terrible, the leg holes are way too big. They do not work for me, but the one OS alva I have works fine now that DS is about 10 pounds, so you might be fine once your LO is a bit bigger.
  • I'm having the same issue. I love our BG 4.0s though. The Alva OS diapers don't fit in the legs yet. :(

  • I have a long skinny baby and my OS alvas work but I prefer his Kawaii P&Ns, baby kicks, and RaRs.

  • I have a super skinny baby - 90-95th percentile for length and 10th percentile for weight.

The NB Alvas worked okay when I twisted the tabs. They started fitting without twisting when she was about 11 lbs and 3 months. I haven't tried my OS Alvas on her yet. The leg holes just look way too big.

I use primarily my Kawaii P&Ns now. They've fit since we got home from the hospital. I also just ordered some Sunbaby diapers in size 1 from a co-op that I'm excited to try.

I also have some BumGenius 4.0s and Freetimes; both started fitting around 3 months.
