Pregnant after IF

mat pants/jeans vs fat pants/jeans?

I'm waffling between just diving in and getting a pair of maternity jeans or buying a larger pair or two of pants/jeans. I know both the upsize and mat pants would come in handy post partum. Obviously I'll need maternity pants at some stage, but I think I'm feeling it's early to roll up in maternity wear. I'm pulling the hair binder top button trick right now and by 2pm it's not really comfortable any more or I might be being sawed in half.

What did you do at that awkward stage of not really a bump but more than just bloat? I'll be 12w on Sunday and our NT scan is next Thurs and I hope I feel a bit more confidently adventurous in the fashion sense, after that.

Also, I think I saw this mentioned elsewhere I sort of have a low bump and an upper bump. What the what? Does everyone have this or only us walruses?

Re: mat pants/jeans vs fat pants/jeans?

  • I think the Bella Band (or one of the several alternatives) worked well during that middle stage since it gives more than the hairband, and it works on any pants/skirt.  When that stopped working or just got uncomfortable (which varied depending on the pants), I went straight to maternity pants. When I tried them on in stores, I found the maternity pants more comfortable than just a bigger size of normal pants, since the waist band of normal pants still hit right where I was most uncomfortable.  Either way, I hope you feel more comfortable!

  • I've been wearing maternity pants for a while, I like the full belly ones cause you can just fold the belly portion down like yoga pants. I loved them for the stim portion of IVF and they've been a lifesaver for the last few weeks. I have some bigger pant but like baker916 said the larger pants still hit in a very irritating place (especially with PIO injection soreness)

  • I would totally go for the maternity pants since you're almost 12 weeks. You can get the pants with the demi panel which you really can't even tell are maternity and you'll be able to wear them throughout most of your pregnancy, although now in 3rd tri, I hate the demi panel and only wear the full panel - go figure!

I vote for being the most comfortable and maternity pants are COMFY!

As for the walrus belly thing, I totally know what you're talking about. I think it has something to do with your belly button. Who knows, but it'll round out in the next couple months!!

This is so true! I don't know if it happens to everyone, but late in the 2nd Tri, my demi panel pants were unwearable, even though the thighs and everything else fit.  I went home at lunch one day to change when I wore them, couldn't even make it through the day.  Annoying.  Maybe it happens to those of use who carry lower or have a shorter torso?

  • In conjunction with my 'fat' pants ( I had lost some weight earlier this spring), I was using the hair rubber band but that was not very effective for some of my clothes. I went to Motherhood and bought their brand of bella bands, which are working out pretty well so far. I got 2 for 25 as there was a sale, check em out!

  • Good question- I'm 15 weeks and awkwardly struggling with clothes! I've been using the bellly band and that's not bad but at times uncomfortable. I couldn't find much in terms of the demi panel for pants but did think about folding down the full panel for a while. Also while we are at it, anyone have recs for affordable places for maternity clothes? Wow are they expensive and I am a bargain shopper by nature!

  • i also have 2 bumps- and i bought a pair of maternity pants at Target but i got them in my regular size and i didn't realize my arse grew too.  so i should have gone up a size apparently.  i also have been wearing dresses like crazy and they are sooooo comfy.  i bought an old navy maternity dress and i want to wear it all the time.  i'll be getting laid off in september so hopefully won't have to buy winter maternity clothes and can just run around the house half nekked with a pair of sweatpants that don't fit.

I didnt know this my first PG, but kids consignment stores carry used maternity clothes. I have seen them on Craigslist too. I was lucky and my friends passed around a bin of clothes tho I still had to fill in with some basics and I just prefer certain things. Target has been good, Old Navy is ok if you can hit a sale right and returns are pretty painless. Walmart online has a few things too. I bought 2 bathing suits (kinda gross but washed them a TON) from a consigment store for $6 each and this summer have used the heck out of them. It was nice to have 2 different ones and if they hadn't been that cheap I would have one bought one. GL!

  • Bite the bullet and go maternity. They're the most comfortable option and it's not like you won't need them. That said, I did use Bella bands for a while plus elastic-waisted skirts and dresses. Oddly, I didn't like the Bella bands until I had enough uterus to push back a little. I felt they compressed me too much early on.

I also stopped in a kids consignment store recently and got two pairs of maternity capris for $2.50 each.   I plan to go back soon and buy a bunch more clothes too - especially since I don't plan to be pregnant again after having these twins - I really hate the idea of buying something full price that I will only wear for less than 6 months.

  • Throwing my 2 cents in... it depends on where you're bigger.  If you haven't gained any weight in your butt or thighs, I'd definitely go with maternity pants.  However not everyone only gets bigger in the belly, so if you are all-around bigger, I would just buy some larger sizes right now.

  • I would definitely invest in a pair of maternity jeans at some point. Maybe you can just keep an eye on sales and make the purchase when you find a good deal.

I don't know about regular jeans a couple sizes up once your bump starts getting really big, unless they're low rise jeans.I can't imagine fitting into my regular jeans with a regular waistband at this stage, it would be pretty uncomfortable. But I'm sure it all varies based on how you end up carrying.

During the in between stages the bella band was my lifesaver, but I'm sure the rubber band trick would work just as well! I also lived in maxi skirts, dresses, and leggings.
