BTDT: Crib Mattress Covers, Pads, Sheet-Savers, etc.

I'm overwhelmed by the amount of choices in mattress accessories.

Waterproof fitted covers?  Waterproof fitted pads (Are these even safe? Isn't the mattress firm for a reason?)?  Sheet savers?  Absorbant plastic-backed flannel squares? It's crazy.

What did you use and what worked?  I'm looking for easy to remove and throw in the wash when baby inevitably pukes/poops/pees all over the thing, and probably at 3AM.

Please recommend brands, too!

  • We only have one actually mattress cover, so I think we went with a good brand like Serta....it is "quilted" but not padded enough to change the firmness of the mattress.

I bought 2 3-packs of the mattress pads (flat rectangular waterproof things) from BRU...they may have actually been bassinet pads, I'd just put one between the sheet and the mattress cover where DS usually slept so I wouldn't have to change the mattress pad except for large accidents.

We did not use a sheet saver until DS was older because I was concerned about the extra fabric under his head even though it was secured to the sides.   If he hadn't had reflux I wouldn't of even bothered with this.

  • Thanks for posting, I'm just as lost as you are on this!  I'll be interested to see if anyone has insight on what did/didn't work.

We have a waterproof matress cover that is quilted, but pulls tight and doesn't seem to change the firmess of the matress at all. I believe it is just BRU brand. On top of that, we used a waterproof crib pad (it was the size of the crib), then layered another fitted sheet over it for easy middle of the night changes.

DS was 10 months before he was in his crib though, so I wasn't too concerned about matresses firmness at that point and all we were really cleaning up were leaky diapers once a week, at that.

  • We use waterproof fitted pads. They are not bulky (at least the ones we have aren't) and the sheet fits so tight I have never had any issues with them. I have also heard of people layering them so nighttime soils can be easily removed and new sheets are already on the bed. We never did it, but some people swear by it.

  • here's a post from yesterday on the same topic, lots of BTDT moms weighed in.

  • With DS, I layered the crib. Fitted waterproof mattress cover, then a sheet. Then I put a waterproof crib sized rectangle, not fitted, covered by another sheet. Then another, then another. So I had 4 layers of sheet with waterproofing in between.

This way if there was a middle of the night issue, I just had to pull off one whole layer and already had a clean layer underneath, ready to go.

It worked awesomely, and I will be doing the same for this DD!!

And I'm still using this method with DS. I suspect it will be very useful when we start potty training!!
