TMI Tonsil Stones?

I have had an intermittent issue with tonsil stones accompanied by post-nasal drip (gross I know). Since I've been pregnant this time around, I've noticed them almost constantly. Anyone else? I know it's really gross to think about, but I guess I want to know if it's worth contacting an ENT specialist, or if it's something that will get better PP. Is it another pregnancy symptom no one talks about?

Re: TMI Tonsil Stones?

  • I used to get these when I was younger! Super gross and they stink too! I have always wondered what urges your body to produce these?!

  • I get them occassionally, but haven't noticed an increase since I became pregnant. They are disgusting. I wish my parents would have had my tonsils removed when I was a kid. I would have a lot less throat issues now.

  • I used to suffer terribly from tonsil stones, to the point i could not eat and drink the pain was that bad. I had my tonsils removed and never looked back!
  • I worked in an ENT clinic for a year and a half. Have you tried using a water pick? I know that's what they recommend for the removal of tonsil stones. As for the post nasal drip, I don't know if there is much they could do other than recommend saline rinses. You could call to there nurse triage line to the clinic to see if making an appointment is worth your time?

  • Your OB should be able to tell you if it's worth being seen by a specialist for, or not... also if the increase in stones is related to pregnancy.  You can pretty much start with asking your OB about any weird medical issues right now, and they'll refer you to the right person, or let you know when to suck it up.

I get them sometimes but I haven't really noticed any since being pregnant.  For me they seem to be the worst during the winter (I'm guessing since I tend to be more stuffed up/mucousy).

I remember reading that increased mucous production can be a pregnancy symptom, which in your case could explain the post nasal drip and tonsil stones.

  • I've had them for the past two years.  So annoying!  I have a lot of post-nasal drip, as well.  So I assume that's what's causing mine.  I have mentioned it to a few doctors and no one ever pursued it.  I had tubes in my ears as a child and lots of ear infections/problems.  I think if it doesn't go away soon, I will be going to a ENT specialist after baby is born.  I don't think I get them MORE while I'm pregnant but I think I might notice them more because they're pretty gag-inducing.
