Advice: veins

edited July 2013 in 3rd Trimester
I'm 29 weeks and my legs are starting to hurt more often not Charlie horses just hurting and I'm getting bad varicose veins mainly on my right leg and when you push in it leaves a dent in my leg for a while and my upper back leg has a bad buldging vein and few other veins looking bad and my lower leg has dark purple vericose veins not sure if its anything to be concerned about I go to doctor thursday but wanted to see if anyone else experienced this... My family's worried if They get worse and it could be a sign of pre eclampsia? Is it? Or it may lead to bed rest?? Just want some opinions of anyone who has experienced this! Thanks :)

Re: Advice: veins

  • It's possible to get a blood clot in your leg especially during pregnancy. Your doctor may want to rule that out but it also is common to just get "bad veins" during pregnancy too.

  • Varicose veins are definitely not a sign of PreE.  I've had them since I was young (hereditary) and pregnancy definitely makes them worse due to the increased body weight and weight of the baby on your arteries.  Most likely they just look ugly, they aren't detrimental to your health.  Mine do ache if I spend all day on my feet, so that's normal.

Don't cross your legs (at the ankles is OK), elevate your legs every chance you get (above your heart is better) and see if your insurance company will cover support hose if your doctor writes a prescription.  I have sock-type hose (go to any medical supply store, I use Jobst brand) which is better than nothing (goes to your knee), but I also invested in a pair of maternity hose which is full support all the way up (like panty hose).  Don't get the smallest compression size, I went all the way to the tightest (they're a pain to get on but feel great) but if you don't want them super tight go with the mid compression.

If your doc is able to document your vein health throughout the pregnancy, there's a chance after giving birth your insurance company will cover the treatment to get rid of them, which nowadays is nothing big (painless injections or laser treatment).  Good luck!!

  • I've had vericose veins both pregnancies, its usually nothing to worry about and is pretty common. Still check with your Dr though.

  • Yeah I'm just worried about how you can touch my leg and it leaves an indent in it.. Is that normal? My legs don't really look swollen I sit and stand thruout the day so I don't do either one to much. I do need to get some of those to wear tho!
  • I have had 3 surgeries in the past for varicose veins. My #1 life saver is compression stockings.

  • My legs aren't swollen either, you want to raise you feet to help the blood move--it will pool if you don't and make your veins even worse!  The indentation thing might be a sign of dehydration, I would definitely ask your doc!

  • For the Charlie horse I would drink water or quianidied water (seltzer water). I wear compression stockings. I have the knee highs for work and the thigh highs for bed. Best part is that in the morning I can actually see my ankles.
