3rd Trimester

Have you bought nursing bras/tanks yet?

For STM, are they even necessary? My girls are fairly small, I don't really need a bra even with my bigger pregnancy boobs, but I wear one during the day since I rather not have everyone see my headlights. I'm thinking I may not even need a nursing bra for awhile after delivery, that I can just get by with my maternity tanks that have the built in shelf bra. Nursing bras and tanks are just so expensive and sure, the little clip at the top makes exposing a boob easy, but pulling up a tank top would be pretty easy too.

Any experience or insight into this?

I'm a FTM so I I don't have a TON of insight, but I think they will make breastfeeding more comfortable for me by having the clip.  You could always get one that's pretty cheap to see if it works for you before buying more.  Walmart.com has them pretty cheap and you can always return it in store if the sizing is off.

  • With both of my boys I wore mostly tanks while nursing. Not special nursing tanks, just tanks with a built in shelf bra. You're right. It is sooo much easier to just whip out a boob in a tank. I personally didn't like the nursing tanks. It's almost like a maze for your boobs. Not a big deal, but not to my liking. The only time I really wore a nursing bra was when I was going out (to dinner, to dr appt, etc) because the tank didn't do a good job of holding the breast pads in place. Didn't want one to accidentally fall out or stick out. Buying  nursing bras can be tricky because you never know how much bigger your breasts will get. Initially, when your milk comes in, they'll get engorged and huge, but that will go down a bit after a couple of weeks. So I waited to buy mine.

  • I am not meaning to sound crude, but if you have no need to wear a bra, I would just use a normal tank and "whip it out". My Ex MIL never needed a bra even when she got her milk in.

I am a D and I wear a nursing bra and sometimes even another tank or sports bra over that to give me more support. I  only wear my nursing bras for if I need the girls to look awesome. I just don't like the fit of nursing bras. That and I like the coverage of the tank top down my side when I do nurse in public. Normally I wear another shirt over top so I am mostly covered.

  • I bought these from Target to wear at the hospital/around the house.  They're cute and comfy (soft) and seemed to be pretty functional.  I was a 36B before my first pregnancy and now I'm a 34DD.  I know my size will still adjust, but these are stretchy.

  • Oh and as far as nursing bras go I plan to use my stretchy pea in the pod ones initially because comfort is king early on and then I'll get fitted for something with more support a month post partum.

Great! That's what I wanted to hear (not the crudeness, though I don't care about that).

I'll look into those. Their brand of bralettes are what I've been wearing most of my pregnancy.

  • Not necessary, but helpful. I didn't always wear them with my first two, but I also didn't have a lot of nursing specific clothing, so having nursing bras definitely helped.

  • I recommend trying them on. I made the mistake of ordering one on recommendation and it was so uncomfortable. Everyone is different so you never know what is going to be comfortable for you until you try it on.
  • I just bought 2 seamless nursing bras and 2 nursing tanks from pea in pod. So comfie and seem to hold my boobs well (38DD). I tried some on at target and motherhood and it just wasn't fitting right. Pea in th pod was expensive ($45 each). However with promo and extra coupon I had, I ended up getting all 4 for less than $100. Started wearing nursing bras today and they are most comfie bras I've ever worn so that in itself is worth it.

I loved my bravado nursing tanks. No maze, just a clip and if you are small they are almost as supportive as a bra too. I did end up buying a nursing bra after awhile but only wore yanks at home.

I bought 4 nursing tanks from Motherhood Maternity a while back when they were having their nursing sale.  I also bought a few sleep bras from Target on sale.  I'm holding off on nursing bras until I see how big these yabbos are going to get.  Plus, I don't anticipate needing a "real" bra while lounging around the house the first few weeks.

  • In preparing my hospital bag, I found these nursing bras at Target that I really liked.
I have a small bust...even at 38.5 weeks I still fit in my pre-pregnancy a-cup bras.  Everyone says the boobs will get much bigger when the milk comes (but people said the boobs would get bigger just from being pregnant, so who knows?)  Anyway, I wanted to start with some stretchy bras so that they will work if I get bigger or not.

I bought these a week ago at my Target store and they were on sale.  Not sure if they're still on sale in store.
