EBF baby, introducing bottle- help!

Hi ladies. My son is 8 weeks today and Im EBF. I pump and store the milk for when we go out, but he barely needs it being were not out much. However every time I give him a bottle, he takes it. Sometimes puts up a fight at first, but overall ends up drinking and loves it. However my Husband just started trying to give him one and baby is refusing. Straight up screaming at the top of his lungs for 15min straight before I take baby. Any advice? I coach my older girls cheer team and we start practice soon- I can't go if I can't get him to take a bottle. I know that if he's hungry enough hell have to give in and take it bc he won't starve himself. But Hubbie gets frustrated and gives up or gets angry. Not meaning to but thinks baby hates him. Ugh! Help?! Thanks!

Re: EBF baby, introducing bottle- help!

  • That's probably the problem is when your hubby gets frustrated or angry your LO can sense it, and in turn he gets upset himself.
Eventually your LO will take a bottle from your hubby, but he might need to try not to get so frustrated and tensed up.

I am really no help. We are just now trying to introduce the bottle to O, and he flat out refuses it also. I am thinking about returning to work in 2 weeks and I want to make sure O will take a bottle while I am at work.

So sorry I don't have any good advice the good news is your baby will take the bottle and just has to get used to your DH giving it. My LO will not take the bottle from anyone he will be 8 weeks Thursday and screams like we are hurting him and I end up tearing up wasting 4oz and giving him the boob. It's sooo hard

Can you wrap baby in something that smells like you, or have your husband hold it to his chest so baby can smell you?
  • How hungry was your baby? I think you're supposed to introduce when not super hungry so they don't freak if they don't like the nipple or can't figure it out because its new. You might also try different brands of bottles and make sure the nipple is the right size/flow for his age.

I started having the same problem. DD just turned8 weeks on Friday. She was taking one no problem before. I go back to work soon so not taking one isn't an option.

I tried feeding her and she was more receptive than dh but that was the first time. I also got her latched and then quickly made the switch to bottle. That worked for a few minutes. The next time, I dream fed, even though it was day time, her with the bottle and that worked for yesterday. She willingly took the bottle 2 more times. Today, she was resisting again. I used the hair dryer as white noise to help calm her, and to slightly warm the nipple. That worked too. Then she took another bottle without a fight later.

also try different positions. Up right, cradled, turning away from you, walking around etc. also try your best to calm her if she's resisting. It will just make it harder.

Eta: I also read that if you go from bottle to boob after a failed attempt wait at least ten minutes.

  • It took two tries to get my LO to take a bottle. I had DH do it while I was in another room. We watched several videos on YouTube about paced feedings for breast fed babies. They were sooo helpful. LO was just getting too much milk too fast the first time. GL!
