Torticollis

LO had his first PT session for torticollis last week and goes back again Tuesday. We have a lot of work to do at home strengthening and stretching. I know someone posted about this before and a few moms had dealt with it. I was wondering how long it took to see significant change/ get LO straightened out. And for the other mom dealing with it now (sorry I forget who it is) how's it going?

DS hasn't been diagnosed with torticollis but he definitely has plagiocephaly and they often goes hand in hand.  Weirdly, the specialist won't see him until September so I'm left wondering what I could be doing in the meantime.

What are the exercises like that you're doing for PT?

Have either of you looked into Early Intervention for your LOs? I'm not sure what state you are living in but LO may qualify for in home services (PT, OT, etc).

Not sure what you mean by Early Intervention...
I have to stretch the neck every diaper change, one to fix the tilt of the neck, the other to fix the turn of the head. And do a football hold stretch with him a few times a day.
I have to work with him on turning his head to the left on his own by guiding him with a toy or my face and working with him on holding his head at midline. We have increased tummy time a lot too to work on strengthing. He def has a little flat spot on the back of his head but his doc didn't seem too concerned. Not sure if doc would have noticed the torticollis if I didn't ask about it. I asked at the beginning of the appt though so he may have.
The PT also said keep him out of carseat/bouncy chair as much as possible. I am trying to transition him out of the rock and play into the flat pack n play cuz I'm sure that's not helping.

DD#1 has torticollis and plagiocephaly While she never had a pressure helmet, we did attend weekly PT sessions. We did tummy time every time that she was awake. We also limited her time in the swing, bouncer, carseat etcand tried to use our carrier more. We did the stretching exercises. She was diagnosed at 1 month and released at 4.

Thanks for the info. Sounds similar to what we're doing. I'm glad to hear she didn't need a pressure helmet

Not a May 13 bumpie, but to chime in... my son is almost 8 months old and he has torticollis.  He started at 80 degrees tilt and is now down to 10.  We went to PT, as often as weekly, but now every 3 weeks.  Its very important to work on the stretches every day.  We noticed a significant difference on weeks where we allocated time to stretch his neck every day.

Our play mat came with a small pillow that has been great to position his head in the car seat, so it will not allow him to turn to his "bad" side.  Also suggest using something in his bassinet / rock and play, such as a rolled up receiving blanket to do the same.  We noticed the most improvement once he could start holding his head up.

Good luck-- -this too shall pass! :)

This is crazy ... I think we were due date buddies (May 9), ended up having boys on the 14th, and my little man has torticollis and goes to PT as well. If your little guy's name starts with a W as well, I'll be floored.

OK, now to get to your question. W has only been to PT once. He has his second session Wednesday. While we were there, I was told to do tummy time and a head rotation exercise 3-4 times a day. I also learned a new way to carry him to help stretch his neck muscles. He was doing very well with tummy time before we went out of town, then I didn't have him do as much (mommy fail). Now that we're back home, he's getting better. He still hates the rotation exercise and often screams (I feel like the most evil person when we do it), but if the physical therapist says we have to do it, we will do it.

I'm not sure how much progress he's making, but tummy time isn't as awful as it was before (still not his favorite, even with his little peanut-shaped pillow). I look forward to hearing what the physical therapist says Wednesday.

Keep us posted on your LO's progress!

They also had us put a rolled-up towel under his crib sheet so he couldn't turn his head to the right, but he rotates himself at night so that doesn't help at all.

Haha. Too crazy, but no he's a J, not a W. lol. Did we both have c sections too? I can't remember.
He had his second appt today and she said she sees improvement, yay! So well keep hammering away with the exercises and stretches. He's getting much better at tummy time and much stronger. Thanks for the feedback. :)

I didn't have a c section, but they had to use the vacuum. W ended up in the NICU for a few days because he had the cord around his neck and had breathing issues (he's fine now).

Glad you're seeing improvement. I hope we will get positive news tomorrow, just like you did. Keep up the good work!

Early intervention is services from the state for developmental issues. The pediatrician would refer you and the therapists come to your home or daycare. Not sure if torticollis would qualify for that though.

Hi ladies! I was the mom who posted about my lo having torticollis. Chloe is doing really well! she's using the other side of her neck and she's not on her right side as much as she was. we have our second pt appt next week and I think there has been some improvement!

Gotcha. LO is seeing a friend's wife for PT so it's been rather nice. Even though we have to go to them. :)

PT went well. The physical therapist said she is seeing progress. W is now turning his head to the left past the mid-line point. We'll start bi-weekly appts. from now on. Yay for good news!
