3rd Trimester

Whooping Cough Vaccine

Hey ladies!! I went to the Dr Tuesday for my 28 wk check and the nurse mentioned getting the vaccine! It was actually nothing I'd ever heard of. I looked on webmd and it said to definitely get it! Just wanted ya'lls opinions. Has anyone got it or chose not too?? I'm pretty sure I will get it the 9th when I go back just wanted to ask :)

Re: Whooping Cough Vaccine

  • I am getting mine in the hospital most likely after I give birth. If there is any vaccine I whole heartedly say to get it is this one. Unfortunately DH is allergic to some of the components in the shot, but if he starts to get sick we will just have him checked out to be safe. My reason is that there have been an increase of cases in PHX so I don't want to risk it.

I was just thinking about this as I got an email from What To Expect this morning on the topic: https://www.whattoexpect.com/wom/pregnancy/0130/new-tdap-vaccine-guidelines-for-pregnant-women.aspx?xid=nl_YourDailyNewsletterfromWhattoExpect_20130725

It says, "In the updated 2013 U.S. adult immunization schedule, the CDC now recommends pregnant women get the Tdap vaccine at about 27 through 36 weeks gestation during each pregnancy. Prior recommendations were within that same gestation period, but not for subsequent pregnancies.

As reported in the Wall Street Journal, receiving the vaccine in the second or third trimester helps the mother build pertussis antibodies that are passed on to the newborn. This offers the baby protection until a vaccine can be given at the age of two months."

I haven't decided when and if yet, will be curious to hear others weigh in. Also, the article doesn't address whether other people who will interact with a new baby should get the vaccine too (dad, partner, nanny, older kids, etc.) Any thoughts on that?

  • We get it. My opinion is to get it. You can get it while pregnant or immediately after delivery.

  • I got mine last week. We've asked grandparents, aunts, and uncles to get it too.

  • I plan on asking the grandparents to get it, and most likely my sisters too. Everyone has been understanding about it and I haven't had anyone cop any attitude with me about it.
  • The recommendation is to get it during the 3rd tri so that some of the immunity is passed on to baby.

  • I'm getting it next week. I've been told so far this month there have been up to 6 cases of pertussis where I live.
  • Definitely get it.

I got mine a month before I got pregnant...because some lady ran over my foot with a shopping cart which cut it open. I had to have a tetanus shot, and that was just an added bonus (since the shot is the TDaP...tetanus, Diptheria, Pertussis).

There has been an increase in Pertussis recently, which can be fatal for infants. There is also a huge community in my area that doesn't vaccinate themselves or their children (their choice...), but everyone that wants to be around my kid will have this vaccination.

I got it. So did my husband, the grandparents and our siblings. Anyone that wants to spend lots of time with the baby right after birth.

  • I got mine at around 28weeks. It is the TDap vaccine, which includes the whopping cough. You should definitely get it and before you give birth.

  • I got mine at my 28 week appointment.  Some practices give it to you immediately after birth, but the baby can benefit a little from it if you get it during pregnancy.

  • We got it. I got mine Monday actually since the recommendation is to get it during the 3rd trimester so the baby gets some of the benefits. My husband and mom are up to date on theirs, as is the friend who will be providing care two days a week when I go back to work. At the hospital where I am delivering, they give it to you when you are admitted for delivery if you haven't had it yet, so you get it before the baby is actually born automatically.

  • Of course I got it.  Pertussis (whooping cough) can be deadly for newborns.

  • I got mine, as did DH and both of our families.  I don't think there are any reasons not to get the shot.

  • In addition to the passive immunity, the shot can make your arm hurt for a few days.  You might be better off getting it in the third trimester when you don't have a new baby to hold/breastfeed/wear your arm out.

  • i got mine at 36 Weeks and DH got it too
  • I got mine, DH is scheduled for his, and our primary helpers (my Mom, Dad and Sis) are all getting theirs too (or already have)

I had my typical reaction to shots when I got mine... a hard lump and soreness.

  • Oh god. Get the vaccine before you have your baby. Make sure anyone around the baby regularly also gets the booster.

Why is this question posted 3 times a week? Vaccines are not evil.
This exactly. Why is it even a question? Why are people always hemming and hawing over some safe and effective modern medicine to prevent your baby from becoming deathly ill?
Because people are stupid. Seriously. If your doctor recommends you get a vaccine the only logical/rational/smart thing to do is ask the internet what they would do instead! Derp!

Well, my doctor hasn't said a thing about it! Thought I'd gather some facts and opinions independently before I march into a pharmacy and get one. I didn't get the impression that the OP was "hemming and hawing" - but that she was gathering information to make a more informed decision for herself.

You can ask about it, it is something we can get.  I was vaccinated against it when I was a child and have had a booster since but whooping cough has made a strong come back, so if you haven't had the vaccine or the booster than I would definitely talk to your doctor about it.

Did I say that the OP was vacillating? I simply said if your doctor has recommended that you get a vaccine then you should ask your doctor about the pros and cons. If you want to gather information then its best to do so from reliable sources that are not the wilds of an internet message board. I think its dumb to come on here and get opinions about something that has so much scientific fact to back it up and you know, history. I'm allowed to think that its dumb.

If you want to "gather information" then do so from reliable medical sources. I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that your doctor will mention it at some point. Unless they don't get updates from the CDC (then you have other problems with an incompetent doctor)  or you weren't listening.

  • Getting mine before I go into labor, I don't know for sure but, usually everything is more expensive in the hospital, so I don;t want to pay for it there... and it is free at my health department! They actually recommend TdaP which is Tetanus, Pertussis and Diphtheria in the same vaccine. Also, make sure caregivers, husband and grandparents also have the vaccine at least two weeks before contact with baby :) (All this from my OB)

  • Get it, and ask family members to get it, too. Our son contracted pertussis when he was 2 months old...it was the scariest thing we have been thru. He was hospitalized and was on an apnea monitor for a few months after. It can be deadly to infants. I will NEVER forget the sound of that cough. :(

Ergo, the only sane, rational, proven method is to get the vaccine, right? I mean yeah...

  • Definitely get it.  I got it when my sister was pregnant so I thought I was good to go for 10 years.  My OB told me that the guidelines changed and a MTB should get it with each pregnancy.  My siblings and parents got it.  My DH is telling his parents to get it too.  I got it at my last OB appointment at 27 weeks.

I got mine and yes anyone who is going to be handling the baby with frequency (father, grandparents, etc) should also get it. It doesn't matter how recently you received a Tetanus-Dipthera shot, they should still get updated to have the TDAP (Tetanus, Dipthera, and now Pertussis).  Some people think they have to wait an additional 10 years just for Pertussis portion but it is perfectly safe to get it sooner. ;-)
