Infant or toddler carrier?

edited July 2013 in Attachment Parenting
Hi ladies, I currently wear DD in a baby bjorn miracle. She is very big for her age, 8 months old but already nearing 30" and 20lbs. She's always been around the 85th percentile in both weight and height. I love the bjorn miracle but now that she is so big I think a back carrier would be more comfortable for both of us. And of course the bjorn is turning into a crotch dangler and I want her to have more support. So I was debating if I should get her another infant carrier (ergo, beco soleil or boba 3G) or go straight to a toddler carrier ( Tula or kinderpack). Has anyone have any experience with the toddler carriers? Do you think I could start using them now or will they be way too big? The manufacturers website don't seem to have a lot of information on how to use the carriers so any feedback you all have would be appreciated. DH isn't too keen on wearing the baby himself so I don't need a carrier that adjust easily for both of us as I will be the only one using it but I do need something that I can put on easily on the back with no help. Thanks for the help and sorry to post the millionth post about baby carriers!

  • Sorry about the duplicate postings, I kept getting errors when posting yesterday so I tried to post a few times and now all of the posts are showing up as duplicates. And I did the same thing on the 6-9 month board, yikes!

I just got an Action Baby Carrier in the toddler size. DD is about the same as yours, just shy of 30" and 20lbs. She fits in it fairly well, she is just on the border of being arms in our out, so she can comfortably do both. Also, the bottom is a little wide, but since it's a light fabric, it just scrunches at her knees.

I chose the toddler size because I did not want to have to buy another one in the future. I don't remember the dimensions of the carrier, but they are on e company's website. I hope this helps!

  • The toddler Kinderpack and Tula are HUGE - the standard size in both brands runs bigger than ergo, etc. and will last a good long while.  As pp said, the Action Baby Toddler would be a good fit for you now.  I would not get the ergo, beco, etc. as they won't be as good a fit (although I do think the beco soliel runs larger but I've not personally seen one yet).
  • I'm still using my mei tai from my second baby. I love it and so does DD. I tried the Moby wrap for a while. It made my back hurts once DS1 was about a year old. I'll stick with my mei tai.

Agree completely. A standard size Tula or Kinderpack, a toddler Action Baby Carrier, or a Bloo Kangaroo Kanga XT. The XT might still be a little big.

Why not? We just had our 35 lb, almost 3-yr-old in the Beco Butterfly a few weeks ago, and it was fine.

lica001, even the "baby" carriers are good for kids up to 40-45 lbs, so you'll be able to use them for a long, long time. I wore both my kids regularly until they were past two. I love the Beco Butterfly, it's good if you're on the taller side. hth

It's not unsafe but if I were buying/recommending something specifically for a toddler, I'd get a toddler size carrier.  A larger body supports kiddo better which is ultimately more comfortable for you both.  If you have a kid who leans for example, something like the butterfly is going to let them arch backwards once they are taller which pulls on your back.  Not a problem if you don't have a leaner of course ;)

I wouldn't say you must have something different/bigger if what you have is working for you.  But if buying specifically for a toddler or bigger baby, it makes sense to buy something larger sized.

  • I just got a Tula cirque de ... It is fantastic and my 5.5 month old dd is perfectly happy in it.... Super comfy for me too!

Again I agree with ncbelle. If buying specifically for a toddler, buy a toddler carrier. How long you can use a baby carrierdepends on a lot of things, incincluding the build of parent and child. Some individuals can wear and be worn in an ergo or beco to the weight limit of 45 pounds. For us, the ergo was unbearable and not knee to knee before 25 pounds. We found toddler carriers much more comfortable at that point.

  • Thanks for the recs. you guys sold me on the action baby toddler carrier. I was leaning towards the boba 3G before but I went and tried it in the store and it fits DD knee to knee now, so I think we will be more comfortable going straight to a toddler carrier.
