August 2013 Moms

well that's just great

sorry for the dear diary post...

as if I'm not stressed enough as a FTM.... add to that my complications, then today I find out when I went to make my last few appointments that my OB is going to be out of the office for two weeks so I don't have another appointment with him until I'm 39 weeks.... soooo no weekly appointments for me and if I go into labor early I will have someone deliver my baby that I have never seen or met before since it's a single OB practice.  the only thing that will keep me sane is I have to have weekly NST's so I will know at least if there is anything to be concerned about but I didn't get to ask all my questions yesterday at my appointment because he had to rush to the hospital to deliver someone else's baby.  I have an ultrasound on 8/6 to check LO's kidneys again since they saw something on the last one that may or may not be a concern and this other doctor is going to review it.  I'm being understanding about it since the nurse told me his mom is very sick so he doesn't know day to day what is going to happen (I don't think she was supposed to tell me but could tell I was worried)

T&P's please for his mom and for my LO.  I hope she will stay an inside baby until her due date and her kidneys are fine.

  • I'm sure all will be well. My OB is on vacation next week but I'm just telling myself all will be just fine and LO will arrive while she is here.

  • My OB was on vacation last week as well. It was a little nerve wracking but it was something I had no control over so I tried not to worry too much.

Mine too!  She just told us at our appointment yesterday.  Guess she's gotta have a life too but I was disappointed to hear she might not be at the birth of our baby because I really like her.  T&P to OP!

  • I'm sure it will work out. I have a similar concern because my OB is a large practice- 10 Drs- and I've only met 5 of them. There are 2 of those 5 that I feel comfortable with (the other three- one has crazy eyes, one looked at his watch every 60 seconds, and the other appeared to be very sedated) so its probable that I'll have a Dr I don't like or don't know. :) However they are all versed in childbirth so I know LO and I will be okay.

  • My OB was on vacation when I had my first, as well. The doctor spends so little time in the room with you that it really didn't matter all that much.

  • I know its hard! But try not to worry too much about things that are completely out of your control.
  • For what it's worth, you'll only see your OB for brief checks and pushing at the end. At which point you won't really care who is down there as long as its someone who can catch.

  • I think there are 10 - 12 OBs that deliver at my hospital, so odds are big that I won't have my doctor deliver the baby. I'm really not worried about it though. I care more about the nurse I get - I hope she's a good one! The nurse to patient ratio is 1:1, so I think I'll be seeing a lot of her.
  • FWIW, I have Kaiser and with them you just get whomever happens to be on call when you go into labor; if that happens to be your doc, great! Otherwise, you get whoever.
I've met a whole lot of the L&D nurses and post-partum nurses through my classes at the hospital and feel really comfortable with them, and I think that's more important anyway since they're really the ones who are there taking care of you for most of labor/delivery unless you have complications.

  • I guess I'm more worried about missing appointments and important information.  it would be nice to have my OB down there and not some stranger but I know there is nothing I can do about it so I'll try not to stress

hopefully you don't get crazy eyes!!  I think I'd rather have the clock watcher or the sedated one over one that looks creepy haha

  • T&P for you and LO!! That stinks that your OB will be going on vacation, and it also stinks more that you're just now finding out! I'm hoping it was a last minute thing that came up and not something he/she has known about the whole time and is just now telling you.

My OB made a passing remark in the spring that she was going somewhere this summer. I told her she better go in July or Sept.

She went in July. Hehe. I'd like to think it had something to so with me telling her, but likely it didn't.

Otherwise she's the only OB in her practice, so if its not her it's whoever's oncall. Anyone of several local docs who I've never met and likely never heard of.
