Once you set up an account, you can put pictures, etc, in your profile.  Then you seek out friends and invte them to be your FB friend.  When they accept, then you can see their info, like new pics they upload, and you can send messages back and forth.  There are also fun little things - like exchanging cyber Christmas gifts, etc. - I usually just respond to things that are sent to me.  It's pretty easy to pick up once you're on there a little.

Also, make sure you set your privacy settings on your account based on how public you want your info to be.  I have mine locked down so only friends can see my profile.  Other people have their info totally public.
