Conscious Sedation for ER? (SAIFW)

For those of you who have done IVF cycles already, were you knocked out completely or did you have conscious sedation?  If anyone had conscious sedation, were you alert enough to really know what was going on and did you feel much of anything?  I think this is the only part of our first IVF that has me nervous.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

TIA!

Re: Conscious Sedation for ER? (SAIFW)

  • I was completely out.  Not for very long but completely out.  I'm not so sure I'd want to do it any other way..but I guess each clinic is different!

    Good luck!

  • I was knocked out completely through a drug in my IV. It wasn't general anesthesia with the breathing tube and everything, but I was definitely completely asleep. I don't remember a thing.

  • I had general anesthesia for my first ER (breathing tube and all) but my new RE does conscious sedation.  I'm a little nervous but I am assured that I won't remember a thing and that it's much easier to recover from

  • Mine is going to be the same week as yours.  I won't be knocked out either.  The social worker we had to meet with told me to bring an IPod and just go with the drugs.  Don't fight them.  I am nervous too!!! GL

  • I had conscious sedation. The first time I was TOTALLY aware, and kept telling the nurse that. It didn't hurt but was weird. THe second time I told them I had been too awake last time so they upped my meds. I still was aware of what was going on but was more loopy. I could "feel" the doctor down there but it didn't hurt or anything. Good luck!

  • I've had ERs with 2 different clinics. ?With one clinic I had no sedation at all, just a shot of pain killer. ?With the other, I was completely under. ?With no sedation, I could definitely feel what was going on but when I was under I felt nothing.

  • I think they called mine twilight sedation? I was definately not completely out, but couldn't feel/here/remember anything.

  • I was knocked out completely. ?And really glad that I was. ?I really didn't want to know what was going on. ?When I woke up it was all done and I was fine.?

    Good luck with your cycle.?

  • I'm with smeyer...my first clinic I was awake for my two IVF's and had just been given a Xanax and a shot before the procedure.  At my new clinic I will be totally out for IVF #3.

  • I've had both. At clinic #1, I had CS, and it was fine.  I was awake and talking (incoherently) for both IVFs there.  I remember each of them, and I did have pain, but I didn't care.

At clinic #2, I had full anesthesia.  It was more expensive, but to be 100% honest, it was LOADS better.  The recovery was easier, it was less traumatic, and just a better experience all around.  It's not to say that I would not go to a clinic that does CS, but just that I did not prefer it.

The major difference was the recovery.  For IVF#1 and #2, I had 19 and 11 eggs retrieved respectively.  After IVF#1, I had horrible pain for a day or two.  For IVF#3 and #4, I had 16 and 32 eggs retrieved respectively, and I had very, very little pain.

With CS, I think the patient can move more - even if you don't feel like you are - and that minimal movement makes the resulting pain greater.  The pain during the procedure itself was tolerable though.

I hate to be a downer, and like I said - if you like the clinic and trust the stats then definitely go with them - you'll be fine :) But just wanted to be completely honest.

  • I had the Twilight sedation. ?I remember the anesthesiologist saying, I'm going to put this in your IV...then something about 'sterile drapes' over my legs and then I woke up and they were done. ?It was a very easy recovery and I'm quite grateful I don't remember anything. ?
  • Mine was conscious, both times - 2 diff clinics. The first time they gave me the drugs a bit early and I was in a happy place when I went into the room for ER. The second time I did not get the drugs until already in the room. Both times I had no pain and was aware but things are a bit fuzzy. DH wanted to buy some of the happy drugs to take home for me :)

    Good luck!

  • I was under completely for my ER but have had CS for an endoscopy in the past- I remember bits and pieces of it (even hit the dr to move out of the way of my view of the screen...whoops) but it was not uncomfortable at all and was kind of like being really really drunk but still able to sort of function.
