Parenting after a Loss

recommend your breast pump

So this is the one area where I feel that I am lacking and am still not sure if I should buy this before the baby is born or wait a few weeks.  Anyway, do you have a pump that you would recommend?  Also what else do I really need for breast feeding...I already have nursing bras and pads for leaking.  I also ordered some nursing tanks.  Thanks.

Re: recommend your breast pump

  • I rented one (Medela Symphony) from the hospital.  The plan had been to rent for a month then buy a lesser Medela once my supply was firmly established.  We are still renting the hospital grade pump because I never produced enough milk and really need the extra oomph of the hospital grade pump to get anything out (BFing didn't work for us).  I like the pump and wish we could buy one outright.

I had a nursing stool which was nice.  I used the boppy when we were still attempting to BF.  We also had extra pump parts, wipes for the pump parts for easy cleanup if we were visiting someone, microwave bags for sterilizing parts, lanolin for my nipples, and the little Medela tubes for storing breast milk.

  • I didn't buy my pump until after dd was born. I was so glad I did wait. We got so many gift cards after she was born that I was able to use those & wait for a sale.?

Now however, I wouldn't buy the PISA Metro Bag. I would buy a single electric pump. I'm a sahm and I only use one pump at a time anyway.

If you're going back to work I would definitely recommend the Medela PISA. It works really well. I don't know about other pumps, but this one you can use other standard bottles for collection. I personally have used the ones it comes with & the dr browns standard. It makes it easier when you start to pump more than 4oz at a time.

I use the lanisoh milk storage bags. ALso get some lanolin cream. It works wonders for raw cracked nipples.

I never used my bottle sterilizer or drying rack. So I returned them. I also never used my microwave sterilizer for the pump parts. I just boil them for a few minutes every couple of weeks.

I also have a boppy pillow & couldn't live without it. I used it in the hosp to prop her up & for her to sleep in on my bed. I used it as a pillow in the hosp. So did dh.?Now we use it for all feedings at home. She also falls asleep on it sometimes while it's around my belly. I also use it as a face ring for when dh massages my back.?

HTH If you have any other ?'s feel free to page me.?

  • I have the Medela Pump In Style and I LOVE it.  It comes in a lightweight smaller bag and I have had no problems with it.  I exclusively pump so I have been working it hard and it is great.

Def. buy some Lanolin cream in the beginning it was a godsend.

  • I have the Medela PISA and it is good, but people on the 0 - 6 board were just talking about a new, much lighter Medela pump...I think it runs off of rechargeable batteries and is hands-free? ?It sounded pretty awesome...

  • I exclusively pumped for 10 months and would highly recommend the Ameda Purely Yours.  You can get a carry case and freezer bg and all the accessories just like the PISA, for a significant cost savings.  My lactation consultant swears by this pump, and I had no problems going to this one full time after using a hospital grade for a month.
