Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Daycare lady pregnant, wwyd?

We put out DS in a new start up daycare with a woman when he was 2 months (now 3 1/2). He is her only child so far, she may have 2 more staring after the first of the year. She is really great with him and has even gotten him on a really good schedule for us. We recently found out that she is pregnant and due in April. So, she obviously knew when we interviewed her that she was pregnant and didn't mention it to us. Now we are wondering if we are gonna need to find a new daycare quick. I don't want to wait til he is at the stage where he is leary of new people, thus making the transition hard. Any advice?

  • Thats a hard one. I can't believe she didn't tell you. You might want to start looking now. Since it can be hard to find. Well in my area it is. I am not sure about yours.

  • I would start by asking her what her plans are when she has her baby.  Obviously, she will need some time (i'm thinking at least a month) to be with just the new baby, but hopefully she'll want to continue to watch your child.

You'll probably need to find something short term.

  • I would be pissed that she didn't tell me too, since it was past her 1st trimester.  Has she brought up if she has alternate care to suggest for the few months that she'd need maternity leave?

  • Why not just ask how much time she plans to take off, and if she will have coverage for her leave?  I do daycare and never had to close when I had DS, that's what employees are for,  She may have an assistant take over for a few weeks.  Just ask.
  • She had no obligation to tell you, just as you had no obligation to tell your employer.

ASk her what she intends to do, perhaps it will work out

  • Hopefully it works out as well for you as it did for me.  She had an assitant that is taking over for the 2 months that she is off.

And I do believe that you really shouldn't be too upset that she didn't tell you right away.  I am sure at the interview stage you were a complete stranger.  I had a hard time even telling people I knew until I was at a certain point out of fear of jinxing things.
