Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Ear infections

Will a 3 month old pull his ear if it's bothering him?  DS has not been himself lately and he's been pulling on his ear.  I can't tell if it's because it hurts, or it's because he just found it.

Re: Ear infections

  • Our pedi said that not all babies under 4 months can pull at their ear (requires some coordination).  DD is just getting over her 3rd ear infection in 6 weeks.  The most common symptom for her is not nursing and incessant crying.  DD is normally a super happy and chill baby, so crying is a sure sign something is wrong for her.  If she refuses to nurse more than 2 feedings in a row (meaning I have to give her a bottle of pumped BM), then I call the pedi and get her seen asap.  Mostly to find out why she's refusing to nurse, but every time she's had an ear infection.  Pedi said it was because nursing put pressure on the infected ear(s) making them hurt, whereas a bottle is much less pressure.  I had to have tubes put in before I was 4 months old, so pedi thinks that DD inherited my tiny ear canals, poor DD!  HTH.
