How does your DC handle large crowds?

well, not really crowds, but a houseful of people? In the past week DD has had two meltdowns...one on Xmas Eve and one tonight at a birthday party. each time the house was crowded and pretty loud and HOT! We have had some warm weather here. On Xmas eve, she totally scared me because it was the first time she got so out of control. Tonight I handled it better, lol. She has just never done this before and I am wondering if it was just all of the circumstances at once bothering her or if she just cant handle a group of people. How does your DC react?

  • Yep!!!! Mine started doing this around 3 months as well. I feel like it's starting to get better maybe????

  • He actually napped during the madness on Christmas. ?Everyone was shocked. ?He does pretty well.
  • My DS isn't too crazy about being around alot of people.  He was rather unhappy on X-mas eve at my aunts house for dinner.  Everyone just wanted to keep passing him around and all I think he really wanted was to be left alone.

  • DS is fine now that he's older but he had a few big meltdowns when he was around your DD's age. They just get overstimulated and can't calm themselves down. DH and I used to bring him to a quiet room to help him settle down. If I couldn't do that, I'd put him in his stroller and put a blanket over it to block everyone out as soon as I saw he was starting to freak out. It's unnerving though because you feel like you can't do a damn thing to help them.

  • She does great, but we exposed her early so I think she's used to it. Our family is huge and out of control [a backstory: my parents are in their mid 40s and hae EIGHT grandchidren, so you can imagine how huge and loud it gets when we all get together] so I wanted to make sure that she didn't get too comfortable with just small gatherings.

  • DD got pretty overwhelmed at my family gathering (30+ people).  She wanted to nurse a lot because that was comforting for her.

  • DS is freakishly amazing in crowds. ?He was "holding court" laughing and smiling at everyone at my family Xmas party. ?I really think it has to do with the fact that we live in a large city and have taken him everywhere since week one. ?
  • normally ds just sleeps when he is in large crowds - but this weekend he had his first meltdown - just screamed for no reason for a few minutes.  I felt so bad, but he calmed down pretty quicklyadn then just fell right asleep again.
  • I've taken DD to quite a few parties and she's always done quite well. Well, there were a couple of times when she was over tired that she got quite fussy but she would probably have acted the same way whether there were people around her or not. Noise and crowds haven't bothered her so far and I think it's because she's been exposed to both since she was very new.

DD has also been exposed to both, I have a large family...this is why I am wondering why all of the sudden the noise and crowds might bother her? But, I really think it was the heat in both cases that really got to her and the noise and crowd just magnified her frustration?? Guess its just a big guessing game! LOL

  • We were visiting my parents 2 weeks ago to have her baptized, and they threw a party with about 50 people..... she was fine, but she was also the center of attention and kind of loves being passed around.

She also loves church and places with crowds for some reason.?

Yeah, if she's always done well in crowds then my guess is that it was something else. It could have been the heat, like you said, or she could have been really tired or going through a growth spurt. Hopefully these were just isolated incidents!

  • I need to be really aware of his signals, Ethan gets fidgety when he has had enough, so today for example, there was a party at my ILs and when I could see him starting to flail a bit, I took him upstairs, he ate and then napped. He could handle about 2 hours, then he needed some quiet.
