Babies: 0 - 3 Months

We will be starting Cereal friday...

but i'm not sure really how to do this...lol.  Do i just ask the pedi and they tell me?  I know you start at about 1tb and mix with the formula and do 1 times a day and start thin and slowly go thicker and more till you do a tottal of 3-4tb a day a couple times day...

does that sound right?  I have no idea about this cereal business

Re: We will be starting Cereal friday...

  • We had to start some today b/c DS has developed reflux and we had to go to the ER b/c he wasn't drinking enough.  Anyway, I used 1tbsp and mixed with about 1oz of formula and it was a good consistency.  Not sure when we up the amount though, we're supposed to offer it after he starts refusing the bottle so that he's at least getting something and it will help keep everything down.  I'll probably ask at his 4m appt. for the progression of how we're supposed to do solids

  • We started DS at 4 months with cereal at night before his last bottle. He got 1TB rice cereal mixed with about 1.5oz formula. He's up to 3-4TB twice a day now. He wouldn't take plain cereal so after about the 5th attempt with him crying and refusing to eat it I started to add a little bit of Stage 1 applesauce and he loved it. Now, I always mix some fruit or vegetables in the cereal.

Anyway, definitely talk to your pedi to see what he/she says. Mine gave me a handout with specific instructions.

  • There are also directions on the box for "baby's first cereal feeding" it tells you the exact ratio of cereal to breastmilk/formula/water. It's 1tbsp cereal with 4-5 tbsp liquid. The first time it's basically the liquid with a few flakes of cereal. If you are going to use Gerber cereal their website is really helpful.
