Parenting after a Loss

How much does your baby eat?

If you have fed your baby from a bottle, how much does s/he eat and at what age? ?We tried Kiran on a bottle today for the first time and he sucked down four ounces in a few minutes and still wanted the breast afterwards. ?Just wondering approximately how much I should budget for the next bottle -- apparently my pumped supply isn't as ample as I thought!

Re: How much does your baby eat?

  • Wow, 4 oz. is way more than Gianna would take at that age!  She eats 5 oz. every 3 hours except for her first bottle of the day (anytime after midnight) she usually takes 6 oz.  Sometimes she gets fussy and only takes 3oz.  My pediatrician says to feed them as much as they will take.at each feeding.  That is not helpful if you are pumping b/c you don't want to waste your BM.  So I guess I am not very helpful and should stop typing - sorry.
  • I found this website. It takes their weight times 2.5 ounces, and then divide by feedings...HTH

  • I believe the general rule of thumb is 2-2.5oz for every pound. DD is 12 pounds and tends to eat about 24-32oz a day. Thats about 6-7oz per feeding and she usually eats about 4-5 times. HTH!
  • Jacob is the same way with bottles.  The last time I tried to give him a bottle, there was 4 oz in it, he gulped it down (in like 5 minutes) and then about 10 minutes later was rooting around to eat more....

I don't have an electric pump yet, so he rarely gets a bottle (has had about 4 now) and each time he drinks the milk so fast that I sometimes think it's not worth skipping the breast feeding... make sense?  I end up having to feed him anyway.

  • Leo is like the Very Hungry Catapillar (I love that book....). He eats about 3.5-4 oz every 2 hours. I can't even keep up, so I have to supplement with formula.
  • Robbie still eats 8 times a day (sometimes 9 or 10. *sigh*) so he eats less. With his God Awful reflux it's probably not going to change any time soon since smaller quantities upset his tummy less. Plus he had a stomach surgery that makes it harder for his stomach to stretch, so it's probably always going to be a challege. (Can I sigh again?)

He eats a little more than 2oz/pound/day most days. Usually one day a week he eats less than that, but again, we have major stomach issues to deal with.

    he's still only about 9 1/2 pounds, so he's eating about 20oz/day.
