Sneaking over from second tri.. moms of boys

Moms of boys, have any of you had any experience with hydronephrosis?? The docs say his kidneys are dilated and we are watching them, next u/s is at 33 weeks. Anyone have this clear up before birth? Was it not really an issue if it didn't? Any experienced answer would be helpful. TIA

Re: Sneaking over from second tri.. moms of boys

  • My DS was diagnosed with hydronephrosis early in my pregnancy so I got many ultrasounds because of it. He had a moderate case so we even ended up going to a level 2 doctor.

In the beginning it affected both kidneys but the right one cleared up on its own before he was born. We are still dealing with the problem in the left one, though. Since birth he has had two ultrasounds, a VCUG (catheder to test for reflux) and just two weeks ago we went to see a pediatric urologist for another opinion. At this point we are playing wait-and-see. He's got not ill effects from the condition, the VCUG came back normal, and it hasn't gotten worse. The urologist wants to see us again in 6 months and its likely we'll have to do another ultrasound.

  • DS has this, both kidneys were dilated at my 20 week u/s. I had an u/s at 36 week and it hadn't cleared up, and DS had an u/s on his kidneys when he was 2 weeks old and it still hadn't cleared up. DS had the catheter test to see if his kidneys were refluxing and it came back negative. So right now we have no idea what has caused his kidneys to be dilated, but the doctors are not concerned. Asher will just have ultrasounds on his kidneys every year until he's potty trained.

  • Pretty much the same thing as the other posters..It was noticed at the 20 wk u/s, we monitored it throughout the pregnancy and it stayed about the same. We had a kidney u/s at 3 weeks old and it was still the same, so they ordered a VCUG and a visit to the pediatric urologist. Since there was no reflux detected in the VCUG (reflux into the kidneys can cause infections), there was minimal concern and we will just follow up in a year with another u/s to make sure it didn't get any worse.
