Reflux mamas

I need some help. DS has been doing so much better for the last couple of weeks. Last night was terrible though.

Charlie has always had silent reflux with some occasional spitting. He went down last night at 8 and woke up at 11:30 SCREAMING. We figured hes probably going through the 3-month growth spurt and is hungry. DH fed him a bottle and was burping him when all of a sudden he began projectile vomiting. It came out of his nose. I know this happens to refluxers but it was the first time for him :(. He was fine after and was smiling. We put him in bed with us for a little while then back to his crib. Woke again at 2 and we gave him some Pedialyte. Woke at 6:30 and we gave him another bottle. He was fine after that one. The next bottle at 9:30 had a large amount of spit-up (not projectile but very large) and he didn't spit until 11.

I'm wondering if this is a stomach bug or reflux related. His appetite is wonderful and even though he is hungry is refusing some bottles and has been doing so for the past week. The nipple is not clogged, it is not too slow - I am stumped. I'm going to call the Pedi GI tomorrow. He is screaming everytime he passes gas. We give him Mylicon after every feeding. I just feel so bad for him.

  • Ugh... I'm so sorry you're having a craptastic time. Reflux is horrible!  To me it sounds like you're making progress, and are maybe having a rough spot.  2 steps forward 1 step back.

If you can't get him to eat at all, then I'd probably call the nurse line.  Stick with the Pedialyte, sometimes that's the only thing Josiah could keep down, and I know it kept him out of the hospital at least once if not twice.  Good luck hon!

  • So sorry! Have they changed the prescription? DD is on Zantac and did great for weeks and weeks. All of a sudden a couple weeks ago, we had a very similar situation. Turns out that she hit her growth spurt and gained enough weight, that the previous dosage of Zantac wasn't enough anymore. They upped her dosage, and we have been peachy ever since.
  • sounds like reflux. dd does this every so often. The projectile vomit really freaked us out the first few times! When you lay him down, make sure he is elevated. We have to prop dd up on pillows or lay her on a pillow on her side just so she is comfy. Try gripe water (colic calm) I ordered it on-line and it really helps. We also switched bottles to the dr. browns. these really help reduce air intake. Reflux really sucks! Also when dd is in pain screaming and we can't seem to do anything to calm her, she does pretty good with a warm bath. Also a little trick I learned is to fill a ziplock bag with warm water and place on the belly outside the clothes. Sounds wierd, but its very comforting to dd. Try it! Good luck!
