Toddlers: 24 Months+

How many 1-2 yr olds still getting a bottle?

My DS can drink from every sippy cup on the market but at bedtime (and now sometimes at nap time) he insists on having his bottle. We only started giving him a bottle when I had to cold turkey wean him at about 13.5 months because of my pregnancy. Should I start to take it away from him? Does it really matter? TIA

Re: How many 1-2 yr olds still getting a bottle?

  • Somebody once asked me if I know any adults who drink put of a baby bottle. It put things in perspective. IMO - bigger battles to fight, and he'll lose interest eventually (although it might be tough for awhile when the new baby comes).

  • My pedi said that although it is nice to have a baby off the bottle by around 12 months, it is not necessary. Some babies still need that comfort, especially around bedtime. It's no different than allowing your baby to have a pacifier, thumb, etc. However, it is not recommended to put them to bed with one because of "baby bottle mouth." I am following DS's lead and not pushing the issue. My DS is 12 months and is still on the bottle because we are struggling with sippy cups and he is tiny for his age, so I'm trying to do what I can to keep his intake up. HTH.

  • My daughter WAS off them around 11 months. But then she was in the hospital. We offered her everything in an attempt to get her to drink. So now here we are back on bottles.

  • DD still gets a morning and a bedtime one.  The pedi said it's not a big deal until she's closer to 2.  I'll let her decide before then when she's ready.  She dropped her others all on her own.
  • DD is on two (sometimes even three) a day. She's been teething for the past two months (8 teeth), so we're waiting until these 4 break through. They've been pretty painful for her. The only liquid she drinks out of the sippy is juice and we're not going to give her juice all day long. The pedi wanted her off of them by 2 years old. We'll try 18 months...
  • DD still gets bedtime and naptime bottles.  I don't think it is a very big deal.  We usually put water or very watered down formula in them.  I think it is the same as a paci or thumb.  I plan on trying to wean her at about 2 years and I will wean DS at the same time.  I think it would be very hard for her to see DS with a bottle if she wasn't allowed to have one so we are waiting.

  • Caroline does for naps/bed.

We tried to wean for 6 weeks and it was AWFUL. She and we did not sleep and life was miserable and I was 30 weeks pregnant.

All my friends weaned when their kids were 2. I was weaned then as well. I think under 2 is too little! It is cheaper to fix teeth then to fix the psyche. I would DEF not wean this close to baby.

amen to that, sister. If you were BFing, would you be told to stop? Mine get a bottle at bedtime and are slowly weening themselves from their 6am dream feed.

  • Suri cruz is like, what, 10 y/o? She still drags one around :) hehe

some battles are not worth fighting - for just at night/morning i see no issue with it.  DS was off of them by a little over 12mos -we used the Nuby sippies to transition- they are similar to bottle nipples... might be a good option if you are having trouble.

  • 17 months and still getting 3 bottles a day - and none are to fall asleep with.

Our pedi and daycare teachers would like to see her off, but she throws a cup at you if you give it to her with milk. We've tried several kinds of cups...she loves a straw cup for water though, and she doesn't drink juice.

  • I don't think its too big of a deal unless you are giving it to him after you brush his teeth for the night.  I was told that was the big issue with it.  I weaned my older DS from his night time bottle around your DS's age and although I was dreading it, he didn't seem to care.  I would give it a while and try again.
  • I think you have to do what works for you and NOT what works for the pedi or for your friends with kids the same age!  If you feel your DC needs a  bottle then do it.  If you feel they are more than ready to wean then do it.  I don't feel that under 2 is too early!  Paige let us know that she was ready to ditch formula and the bottle - we did not force it on her.  So I say the best advice is to read what your child wants and then go with it! Paige still gets a paci at bed and naps and I am cool with it - as long as she doesn't have it in her mouth 24/7 then it is ok.

basically this. aidan gets a bottle at nap and bedtime. whatever. its watered down soy milk. i have bigger fish to fry than this lol

the problem is that it will bother their teeth eventually for 2 reasons - the sugar in milk or whatever you put in it besides water and also bc of the nipple bucking teeth out.

just be careful. lol i always laugh about this bc she drinks from an open up all day but at sleep times its a bottle lol
