help with pump

I'm going to get a pump either tomorrow or Monday and need help deciding what to get.  I'm a SAHM.  I have a good supply (I think) but I want to pump to have BM stored up so DH can feed sometimes and to relieve some of the pressure that I get in between feedings.  I know I want an automatic pump, but other than that, I don't have any preferences.  I know the Medela PIS is close to $300, and I'm willing to pay that if it's what I need, but would another pump work just as well for me?

Also, when I buy a pump, do I need to get extra tubing or anything else at the same time?  What do I store the milk in?  Sorry for all the questions.  I just figured you would be more helpful and honest than the sales people at BRU.

TIA!!

Re: help with pump

  • if you are home and plan to use it once in a while, I would get the lansinoh double electric, I got it from drugstore.com for about $140 and I use it A LOT and never had any issues.  If you were a serious pumper then I wouldn't suggest it but I work PT and use it almost every day.

  • also, you can google $10 off for drugstore.com if you never used it before.

  • You can get the PIS for closer to $200 if you shop around. I think Bestbuybaby.com has it was $215. You have to email for pricing, but it's 215ish I believe.

I'm not sure about the other questions as I'm still using the rented hospital pump. I believe that most Medela models come with at least a few storage bottle which should get you started. You can get inexpensive ones from BRU if you need more.

  • I have the Lansinoh pump, and I love the fact that it's a closed system.  I got mine on Amazon for $111, but I've seen it on there as low as $99.  If you can catch it on sale it's a great deal.
  • I have the ameda purely yours and it works great.  It was rated by Baby Bargains to be as good as the PIS was (if I remember correctly).  The LC at my hospital told me the Ameda was a good pump.  I think it is the exact same pump as the lanolish (sp?) one - or very similar.  You should look into freezer storage bags for your supply.  They sell them at Target and BRU.  Everyone I know with a PIS or Ameda purely yours has nothing but good things to say.  One bouns to the Ameda is that it is a closed system, meaning that no milk gets into the tubing or motor.
