Babies: 0 - 3 Months

For those who have stated solids-

DS has been on rice cereal for about 3 weeks now. i want to start making baby food at home. First food will be sweet potatoes. For those who have started solids, did you introduce a veggie at each feeding along with the rice cereal or at separate feedings. and before anyone asks why we did this so early, it was after much discussion with our pedi. TIA!

Re: For those who have stated solids-

  • The fist 2 days I mixed it with cereal. Then I offered it alone.

I have a suggestion for pureeing sweet potatoes. I made my puree really thin and aparantly DS didnt like it that way. When I do it again I will mash the sweet potatoes with less (or no) water and add water/formula/breastmilk each time to get it to the consistancy your DS likes. I am stuck with a few huge batches of runny baby food my DS doesnt like!

  • Thanks for the tip. Did you use a food mill or just hand mash it?
  • I used a blender the first time with lots of water. Don't do that! The second time I just smushed with a fork really well and added a little formula to moisten it.

  • I'm not giving him cereal at all (I did in the bottle a couple of times but that's it).  We went straight into the veggies starting with butternut squash.  Next we are doing either apples or sweet potatoes, not sure. I don't think you have to talk to your pedi every time you are going to introduce a new veggie.
  • BTW, the consistency of fist solids is supposed to be only slightly thicker than formula/breastmilk.
