Moms who have gotten off the nipple shield

Did your nips go through an adjustment like you were starting from ground zero with BFing?  We have made significant progress this week and I think I can say we are off the shield but my nips are so sore and one is cracked like it was when we first tried w/o it in the hospital.  I have a call into a LC but of course with the holidays it is hard to get a hold of anyone.

Re: Moms who have gotten off the nipple shield

  • Yeah, I had to start using lanolin because they were getting raw.  But after a couple of days, everything was fine- we didnt need the lanolin and we havent gone back to the nipple shield either! GL

  • I used the shield for almost a week and then just gave it a try without two nights ago and he immediately took the breast without it. But ever since, my nipples have been a LOT more sore and it stings pretty bad while he is nursing.

Lactation consultants always tell you nursing shouldn't be painful so I wonder if I am doing something wrong. I hope it is just a matter of getting used to not having the shield.

  • Yes this sounds normal to me.  My nips were super sore after we took off the shield.  Only last about a week though.  HTH. GL.

  • Yeah, my nipples were in a lot of pain.  I think that it was a combo of DS not really latching on correctly after the nipple shield and then having to get used to bf'ing w/o the nipple shield.  I used the Lanisoh lanolin and eventually we got through it and have been able to nurse without the shield and without pain.

    GL!
