Proof that kids develop SO differently!!

And totally an AW for my dd :)She is almost 3.5 and can write her name and spell a few words (cat, hat etc) but she cannot open the fridge! She was talking early, but didn't crawl until 12 months or walk until 17 months. She's still behind the curve physically. It seems like a lot of kids excell at either one thing or the other- verbally etc or physically. Until they all even out and catch up with each other anyway!

  • Lol -- that's so cute. I wish my DS couldn't opent the fridge! All he does is take everything out and dump it on the floor.

  • Yeah, it's amazing how different they can be.  My DS was only saying a few words at 22mos but at 16 mos could unlock and open round door knobs...he could also stand unassisted without pulling up at 10mos.  He's very advanced physically but was very behind verbally...he is just catching up verbally now at 24mos.

  • My DD#1 is just like yours.  We stopped counting her words around 15 mos because it exceeded 100; she could sing at least 3 songs by 18 mos, knew all her colors and shapes before she was two, and now can recognize virtually all letters and has started to write them.  She never used a raking grasp because she had the pincer grasp down early.

BUT!!!  She didn't crawl until whe was 12 mos and didn't walk until she was 18 mos.  She still isn't a big climber, and probably won't ever be.  Her day care peers are definitely catching up verbally and you'd never be able to tell that she walked so late compared to them.

They pick and choose what they want to concentrate on, that's for sure.

  • So true. My DD is very much like yours. She has such a huge vocab, knows colors, shapes, etc. but crawled and walked a little later. Her cousin crawled early, stood early, climbed early but is not as verbal as DD was at the same age.??Its strange seeing such a big difference between kids but its still all normal range.?

  • My daughter is the same way-slower to develop physically, but quicker in her verbal and mental skills.  She is 2.5 and still can't turn door knobs to open doors or climb out of her crib- and she is very tall for her age (37inches).  She didn't crawl until 14 mos (was a butt scooter before that) and walked at 16 mos.

  • I think they usually do even out and catch up, but I think strengths and "weaknesses" are natural too.  No one is going to be good at everything.  My DS loves "math" (really pre-math at 3 y/o) and has very little interest in language.  I think it's fascinating to see them develop into individuals, don't you?  =)
