What hospital are you delivering at? I know Overlake does it because my ob is part of a team that is part of a group that wants to do studies on it. At my very first appointment my ob gave me paperwork on it so I know there is some to do before the birth.
We did it. Through Puget Sound Blood Center and I delivered at Swedish Ballard. I think you can sign up at anytime...we did our paperwork way ahead of time, but besides the paperwork I just reminded the nurses and my midwife when we checked into the hospital. They did the rest. Very easy, I'm sure the website has a lot of info.
We did it through swedish first hill. It turned out to be a really cool thing because my ob told me it is basically being banked for free. The likelyhood of it being a match for someone else is pretty small but if you ever needed it then you would be a match for it! : )
I did it at Swedish First Hill. I had vaguely thought about it prior to delivering, but never got my act together. The nurse mentioned it when we were going over paperwork early in my labor. There were two options presented to me: 1) doing a donation to research which required me to do absolutely nothing but consent, and 2) the standard donation which required me to give several vials of blood for testing. After already having undergone quite a few pricks to get the IV in, I chose the first. They were very proactive about discussing it with me, so I'm sure you're not too late.
You'll have to check out the puget sound blood center website and it will tell you the participating hospitals.
I had signed up and then my Dr switched hospitals and the new one is not a participating one so I had to call and cancel the donation. They were sad to lose someone, so I know they will be appreciative even this late in the game!
ditto angluvsammon, we did it at Swedish Ballard and I did the paperwork very last minute. Be sure to remind the nurses and OB. If you plan to have the cord pulse out there may be some resistence however. We wrote in our birth plan to let the cord pulse out but we were able to collect the cord blood still. We just let them know that pulse out was a larger priority to us if we couldn't do both.
