WDYT, new pedi?

Ok so i am still super concerned with DS's weight loss. at 10 1/2 months he was 27 lbs 6 oz 31 inches, as of today he is 24 lbs 8 oz 33 1/4 inches. Pedi says "he looks great" which is all he ever says at any appointment... he never asks if Aiden is crawling or walking or talking. Aiden went in for his skin and the pedi looks at him and says "it eczema, I think. put this on him and if it doesn't go away in 2 weeks bring him back cuz it's something else" Ummmm seriously?? he is a nice guy but he doesn't seem to care about anything WDYT should I find a new pedi?

Re: WDYT, new pedi?

  • He doesn't even ask about talking, walking all that at his well baby visits?  My pedi has a check list and we go over that list when she comes in to see Paige.  If we are there for something else (sickness) she doesn't ask any questions about development.  I think the whole skin rash thing is kind of weird, HOWEVER, it is kind of hard to tell what some skin rashes are caused from.  I see you live in Wisconsin where the air is cold and dry this time of year.  We were told the same thing with Paige's skin and we are using Eucerin lotion and it is working MIRACLES!  I would say if Momma is not happy with the pedi then YES it is time to find a new one!  You have to feel comfortable when you go there and if you are dissapointed when you leave then you should be there!

  • BTW - is Aiden eating as much, is he cruising, walking more then he was 3 months ago?  All of those could pay tribute to his weight loss.  If at your next well baby visit he looses more THEN I would be concerned.  But at this age they are getting more active and they are growing taller so they are losing some of that baby fat!

  • he is walking, but he eats more... he never stops eating... I just thought a pound a month sounded like a lot. and he dropped from 98 percenntile to 50 percentile in weight and is still 98 percentile for height... maybe I am worried over nothing

  • That is a big jump, but like I said - I would not be ALARMED until I go back in for the next well baby.  If he has dropped again then I would be concerned.  Did you watch the scale when they weighed him both times or did the nurse do it?!  I had a friend that they measured the babies head at one visit then 3 months later measured again - the head had grown so much that they TOLD her the baby had a brain tumor and she needed all these test to come and find out they had wrote the wrong number down on the sheet!  They didn't think about questioning them to remeasure - needless to say they no longer go to that pedi - how do you tell someone their child has a brain tumor just by a measurement!  UGH! DOCTORS!  Anyway, I would make sure that is what he really weighs - maybe they mis-wacked it at his well baby 3 months ago?! I don't know - I would try not to freak out - especially if the doctor is not concerned. Did you try searching Toddler/Infant weight loss online??

  • agree with Jess - I would find a new pedi if you are not comfortable.  You are going to be with this doctor for a LONG time, and you need to respect their mediacl advice.  It sounds like your pedi is half-asssing it.
  • I haven't looked up weight loss yet, I do watch them weigh him, and I know it's right because at his 9 month appt he was 26 lbs 8 oz and at his 12 month he was 25lbs 2 oz, so he is consistantly losing... and we weigh him at home or at the county WIC department (because of his huge weight gains and then sudden weight loss I wanted to keep an eye on it)  the months he doesn't have a ped appt. I should look into it, it is slowing down, (this month he only lost 7 oz)

  • He was obviously a big baby at 98%.  I think he is just adjusting now and becoming more average.  My nephew was the same way.  He is getting taller and they look at that more that weight gain.

I do think it is weird that they don't ask about milestones.  Though my ped just usually asks in passing, doesn't make a big deal out of them.

If you aren't comfortable, ask around and change.
