Hello! Introducing myself and a question about feedings

I just wanted to say hello since I am sure you have all been in my shoes before and have a lot to offer as far as advice! I just gave birth on Friday at 35 weeks, 4 days, although they determined that she was only around 35 weeks flat at time of birth . My DD was 5lbs, 5 oz at birth but has since dropped to just under 5 lbs, which wasn't too worrying to me since the doctors all said it is normal, but as of today she is looking a little jaundiced. We are now home and she is a very happy and easy baby so far.

How much and how often did your 35 weeker eat? She will usually eat 20 mL or less in a sitting, every 2 hours. But today at home all she wants to do is sleep. I have gotten her to eat, but only maybe 10 mLs each sitting.

Any tips or advise? I hope the jaundice coloring is just from not eatting too much but now I am all worried.

Re: Hello! Introducing myself and a question about feedings

  • I had my little one at 36 weeks 2 days and when we came home he was taking 30ml every 3 hours. I would really try to get her to eat all 20ml at each feeding and if you are worried about jaundice call the Dr.
  • Hello! Congrats on your baby girl!...I just had my son on December 5th at 35 weeks 1 day. ?He developed jaundice at 3 days old. ?He would also eat about 20 mL every 2 hours. ?The day I noticed the jaundice he wouldn't eat and would just sleep all day and not really want to wake to eat at all. ?I would be lucky to get 5-10 mL. ?I called to doctor and they had me come in to check his bilirubin levels and they were at 17.5 so he had to be put under the bililights. ?The doctors told me that babies with jaundice won't eat well and prefer to just sleep. ?I would say to call her doctor. ?Good luck and keep us posted!

  • DS was born at 35 weeks too.  He was eating about 20 ml every two to three hours--we sometimes had to wake him for feedings because he was so sleepy.  This wasn't easy!  He had jaundice while in the hospital and had to be under the bili lights for three days.  The nurses said that it was important that he eat well because that will help with his jaundice.  I would still call your doc though!

  • Thank you all so much for your responses! It is great to hear that others have experienced this. The nurse came over and said it wasn't too bad, just to continue trying to get her to eat and that she will call tomorrow to check in on us.

And she just ate 40 mls!

  • take things one day at a time. the feeding issues are frustrating, but once she figures it out she'll be home. ?congrats and welcome.
  • Welcome and congratulations! When Ruby came home she was just under 5 pounds and she was eating 60ml's every 3-4 hours, but that was after weeks of eating. So give it time, keep trying, and I'm sure she'll get the hang of it in no time. Once they get it, they really get it!
