Babies: 9 - 12 Months

last nite I was a horrible mother

dd didn't go to sleep until 1:30!!!!!!!!!!!  she woke up at like 9:45 and wouldn't go back to sleep.  she was laughing and having a blast, then she got really tired and would not go to sleep.  I was so frustrated w/ her by 12, dh was no help, I didn't know what to do.  She has never done that before, itw as so weird.  well here is my confession, I yelled at one point, just out of frustration because she was crying and wouldn't go tosleep and I was just beyond tired.  I didn't yell at her but I just yelled, argghhh!  and it scared her so then I felt terrible.  sigh....I just was so frustrated at that point. btw...he is still no help, went to "use the bathroom" about 40 mins ago and haven't seen him since.  thanks for the help honey!

  • you're not a horrible mother--you're just a mom :-)  if it makes you feel any better DH doesnt help at night either (he's a heavy sleeper so I'm not sure if he doesn't hear her or figures I've got her)

  • Ugh, I am so sorry. I have this happen about once every other week for me. The frustration is unbelievable. I used to cry at first, but now I am used to it and even though I am tired, I know that no amount of yelling or crying is going to help.

Does DD have a swing? What I do now is stick AJ in the swing and camp out on the couch. I usually wake up after a few hours and he's sleeping, so I bring him back to his crib and me to my bed.

  • You are not a horrible mother - you are a human being who was tired and frustrated.  I have been there and yelled in the same way before - mostly out of frustration that my dh wasn't helping and that dd would not sleep, so I get it!   If you makes you feel better, I have also had nights where I have told dd to "Go To Sleep" between clenched teeth, b/c if I didn't clench them - I would have yelled at her!  It's hard when you're tired.  But I bet she is smiling at you this morning... no harm done :)
  • Well if you're a horrible mother then so am I :) I've done that too and yes, I felt like crap about it too. It's just human and sometimes you can't help it. I felt so bad the next morning and DH even woke up to take over b/c he heard how frustrated I was, I felt sooooo bad the next morning. It happens, don't feel too bad.
  • I have been there too.  DH works until 2am, so it's just me and DS for most of the night.  On those really rough nights, I've yelled too and then cried because I felt so bad.  It's not being a bad mom, it's being a human.  It's frustrating and being tired doesn't help.

  • We've all had nights like that!  It doesn't make you a horrible mother - just a mom!  We all get frustrated.
  • Been there. You're not a bad mom, you're just a mom! We all get frustrated like that from time to time. I still remember back in the summer (when I was still in the throes of PPD, mind you) when DS wouldn't stop crying and take a nap, I just yelled, "Why won't he go to sleep??? Why???" He stopped crying and had a terrified look on his face. I felt like crap, but it happens. Don't beat yourself up over it.
