Surgery is scheduled for Jan 6... I just wondered who else has had it done and what the recovery was like for your DC. My guy is a trooper, but I don't know what to expect. I'm ready to get it over with though - I wish it was sooner!!
Jamie, I may have more to say after the surgery, but as of now I'll say DON'T DELAY!!! We saw the ENT in mid November and he recommended it, but I think all ENTs are going to recommend it. I didn't want to do it, so we got a 3 day antibiotic shot and saw and allergist (I thought he had an allergy that was keeping the infection going. I was clearly wrong.) and now I'm so many weeks behind with this infection still looming. So, if they say "do it", you should probably listen. Don't be stubborn like me! But at least my DS does not show signs of pain to his ears, it's just in there being junky. gross!

Can I ask what you've gone through to lead to this? How many ear infections has your DC had? I'm just curious about your situation, at what point does a doctor decide this is the next step?

My DS has had a ruptured ear drum and 4 ear infections, including the one we are currently fighting. Thanks for the advice! I will definitely listen to the ENT

yeahhhh. you sound like a classic tubes case. A friend of mine has a DD who is on her 3rd set of tubes (she's 3) and she said it was like night and day. So be prepared to get that recommendation and it will probably be for the best. I'm prepared and I know it's the right thing to do, but I just didn't WANT to have to do it, ya know?!
Oh wow! Poor little guy. I hope I wasnt out of line asking but we've been battling ear infections and I was curious about your situation. Thanks for sharing and good luck!

This started at the end of July - we went in for a bad cold and found out he had 2 ear infections. I think they really just never cleared up because we would start a 10 day antibiotic, go back to the pedi after about 5 days and she would say "it's looking good, just finish the medicine". So we have done Amoxicillin, Augmentin, Cefdinir, then maybe another version of Amox?, then the 3 day shot, and now we are riding on a minimal daily dose of Amox until we can get the tubs in because the infection just won't quit. So I guess it's been about 5 occurrances?! Also, when he gets a cold, he wheezes and sounds rattly so our Pulmonologist said today that she definitely thought that clearing up the ears would help. We'll see!
He's also in Daycare and it was recommended that we pull him out for a month to see if it would clear and it's been 10 days and now instead of 1 infection, he has 2 so that didn't help. He still won't go back to daycare until after the 1st of the year (well, now after the week of the 6th).
But he has never showed ANY signs of discomfort... he babbles and I think he makes pretty good sounds (dada, etc) so I haven't been worried about his hearing, but we have to do something and this is it.
DS #1 got tubes right after his 2nd bday. I really should've done it sooner but I kept putting it off for some reason. I was hoping the ear infections would just go away but they never did. Anyways, the surgery itself went great. I will say that when DS was coming out of anesthesia he was screaming, crying, and wiggling like crazy. The nurse said that is common for children waking back up from it. That last about 30 minutes or so and afterwards he was back to his ole self. I also must add that the year after that was the best year ever. He was never sick and got maybe 2 ear infections (but were never bad or really hurt him) and they just drained. It was fabulous. Now we're looking at getting our second set though. GL with the surgery. Everything will be great and you'll be glad you did it!
My nephew has had them done twice. They saved his hearing. He had chronic infections because my sister's house has mold. They waited too long to do them. (Like six months too late.) Alex had profound hearing loss and speech problems. He's six now, and still hard to understand, but doing so much better now.
