Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9 mos old twins, VERY diff. size!!!

Does anyone else have twins who are extremely different in size.  My identical twin girls are 9 months old.  One is 21lbs and almost grown out of 9mos size clothing.  While my other is just 13 lbs and barely filling out the 3 mos clothing, although, length wise they are almost too short.  I just worry that she will always be so much smaller than her sister.  The larger one is at the 50 % mark on the growth chart, while the smaller isn't even on it yet, although she is growing accordingly.  At birth they were 6lbs 8oz and 3lbs 15oz.  And to top it off the smaller one won't take a bottle any more.  I can sometimes get her to take about an oz, but after that I have to feed her cereal with formula and veggies or fruits.  While her sister will still take a bottle for 2 of her daily meals.  They are both active and crawling all over but the larger one is already walking along furniture and pulling herself up. The doc ran tests and says the smaller one is perfectly healthy, thank goodness.  But will she ever catch up in size?  Has anyone else started with twins like this and now they are older?  I appreciate your info.

 Thank you!

  • You should ask this on the Multiples board.

I think it is fine that they are different sizes.  Every kid is different and just because they are twins doesn't mean that they will be exactly the same.

I would be concerned about both of them eating though.  Formula or BM should still be their main source of nutrtion.  Solids are extra.  Do not replace a bottle with solids until they are a year old.

  • My sister has twin boys who are like this. One was born at like 7 lbs 10 oz while the other was only 4 lbs 11oz. They are 13 months old now and still differ in size. My 9 month old DD is about the same size as the smaller twin....which is like 20lbs and 28 inches while the other is a few pounds heavier and an inch or two taller. I don't know if that helps you at all, but as long as they are both healthy, I wouldn't worry. Besides, you can use hand me downs from the older twin!!
  • My boys are 26 pds and 21 pds..
