ideas how to make 1st ornaments?

I want to make 2 ornaments for our DD's first Christmas(es?) today but have no good ideas. . .  Does anyone have any ideas - i'm not too crafty, and we're stuck inside with 2 feet of snow coming. . . so i'll have to make-do with materials i have in the house.  I do have some cheap art kits with paint and some photos of them i coud cut up. . .

Re: ideas how to make 1st ornaments?

  • Hmmm...I know you can make a dough that you bake (I don't have the recipe but I think it's just flour and water), you could make a "frame" out of that and paint it and put a picture in the middle.
  • dry rice and glue mix together and form a wreath on wax paper.  Once it drys paint it ( or you cn put green food coloring in the glue when you mix it with the rice) then hot glue a picture in the wreath and a little ribbon bow on the use to hang on the tree.

trace both hands and a foot on card stock.  the hands are antlers and the foot is the face.  Make a raindeer.  Decorate with what you have.

I have a few more let me know if you want to hear them

  • Michael's sells clear glass ornaments for decorating. ?What I did last year was roll up a small photo & slip it inside the ornament. ?Then I used tweezers, q-tips, & the eraser end of a pencil to unroll/flatten the picture out inside of the ornament. ?After it was adequately flattened against the front of the ornament, I filled the ornament w/ribbon (you could use anything lightweight really..cottonball "snow" would be cute) & used a paint pen to write the year on the back of the ornament. ?I'll try to PIP.
  • sorry it's a bit blurry, but you get the idea?

  • Every year my mother cries when she hangs an ornament that my father made for my older sister's first christmas.  It's just a piece of canvas with her handprint in red paint.

  • My sister's daycare made an ornament using her son's handprint in baked clay with a string to hang.  It was adorable!  And I like the reindeer idea above, too.

  • Thanks for the great ideas!  I think I'll try the reindeer with the hands and feet, and if I have enough time, the footprint in the baked clay

     Merry Christmas!
