nbr: i hate my house

We are still in our "starter house" that we bought just before getting married.  We have slowly worked on it but didn't have the money to do some of the major things (new windows, doors, etc) and today weather.com says it feels like it is -19 out.  I can feel drafts coming through the doors, we don't have storm windows on most of the windows, just screens, and the blowing is so bad there is snow coming through the screen and sitting between the inside window and the screen.  I know we need a new roof and insulation put in the 'crawl space' under the roof.  This is all stuff I hope to get done in spring now that DH has a new, better paying job I'm just really frustrated about it lately.

  • I feel ya.

Our house was built in the '20s and the ILs purchased it to flip.  DH decided he wanted to rent it from them a few years ago, so he moved in and they stopped doing stuff to the house.  Now, it's like pulling teeth to get anything done around here.  We have plaster walls, no insulation.  We had insulation blown in last year and it helps, but it's only in the floor between the first & second floors, and a crawl space upstairs.  For the shower to have hot water, we have to run either the dishwasher or the washing machine first.  We keep our thermostat at 70?, but it stays 10+ degrees cooler in the house.  It's soooooooooooo obnoxious.

  • I feel you. We have one big window that is really drafty and we hung up a huge blanket over it between the curtains and the window. And the heater is weird. Doesn't matter what the thermostat is on, if our bedroom doors are open, it's cold in them, and if they're closed, it's like a furnace. You have to leave it open like 6 inches. It's crazy.
And no insulation. Bah!! So, you're not the only one if it makes you feel any better. :)

We rent and I want to buy a house and move so bad!

  • Our house is over 100 years old. There is no basement. The downstairs is so drafty. It can be like 70 degrees downstairs and 80 upstairs!  Although it is our first home, I know we'll be here for at least another 4 or 5 years (we've been here 3 years already). We have four bedrooms, so if we have another baby, we're okay on the space. Lily even gets a playroom now!

  • I hear ya. I am in Michigan, too. I have so many home improvements to do to our house. By the time we are all done we will be ready to sell, lol
