Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What works besides CIO?

About 2 weeks ago, DS started fighting bedtime hard.  He wails at the top of his lungs for 5-30 minutes.  This is a new thing, he fell asleep beautifully for the first 7 months of his life :(

We've been going in every 5 minutes and trying to soothe him, but it actually seems to make him even more agitated when he sees us.  I can't believe I'm contemplating CIO, but it almost seems like that's what he wants/needs.  I'm so torn, I just don't know what to do, but I do know that I cannot stand listening to him wail much longer - it breaks my heart to hear him so upset!

Any advice is appreciated, TIA!

Re: What works besides CIO?

  • When you go in every five minutes, do you rock him? When we were first sleep training dd, we didn't put her down in the crib until she was very drowsy. Then gradually, as she learned to put herself to sleep, we could put her down more and more easily.

Also, do you have a bed time routine? Bath, nursing/bottle books, rocking, and then bed. It might help your DS if he starts to recognize when bed time is coming. Or do you think he's teething? Maybe some motrin would help? HTH!  Good luck!

  • I just went through the same things and couldn't stand letting her CIO any longer.  It seemed to get worse as the week went on.  So someone reccomended to me the No-Cry Sleep Solution book.  We haven't gotten into it yet because little one is teething now, but it's a better/helpful option.
  • I also found that going in to check on him made it worse, so I stopped and it actually made him cry less.
