Also NBR: DH caught THREE plagiarists!

DH caught three plagiarists in one of the courses he is teaching this semester.  Three in ONE course!

He can't figure out if they think he's an idiot, or if they think he doesn't read their papers, or if they think he won't recognize the writings from Wikipedia, their TEXTBOOK (seriously that's stupid), or from one of the first hits when you Google the subject matter.

One of them is trying to appeal and insisting he did not plagiarize.  DH is just annoyed that all three will only get an F in the class - their transcript won't say that they got an F because they're cheaters!

Where we went to school, there was an honor code.  If you got caught plagiarizing or cheating in any other way, you were booted from school.  The end.

Re: Also NBR: DH caught THREE plagiarists!

  • Wow. That's pretty bad to have caught three of them! That's so stupid. You go to school to learn something, but to copy someone elses hard work and cheat. Come on people...

  • People are stupid.

We had an honor code too.  They should have something worse happen to them than just getting an F.  The sad thing is they've probably cheated before and will cheat again.

    Peru!

Exactly!  DH and I were talking about it the other night, and I guess there can be one "warning" with just a fail...but come on!  Their record should have a big ol' red flag and every professor should know to watch them for cheating - and if they do it again, they should be expelled.

I just can't believe he caught three of them in a single course.  He caught one a few years ago - someone actually stole his roommate's paper while his roommate was out.  WTF?  His roommate was completely stunned - and DH had to confront him to make sure he didn't knowingly allow his roommate to copy the paper.

    Morons!

  • Is this highschool or college?

    That's pretty shameful.

Call me a dork, but I actually enjoy writing papers. I had to do a 10 page essay for my final two weeks ago on "Multimedia Technology and the Workforce" and was excited about it. Geeked

  • What really sucks is when you're 99.9% sure they cheated but you can't prove it.  I had that happen in the college class I taught this semester.  She failed anyway, but still...

  • Uggh, that is bad! BUT I can tell you why people think they can do it.

I am an 8th grade English teacher. I caught like 15 kids plagiarising their research papers for my calss. They think I am an old fart who doesn't know how to use google.

Anyhow, I asked my principal and vice principal to have a talk with these kids and tell them how serious the whole thing is. I wanted them to have a consequence, such as an extended detention or inschool suspension where they would have to redo the papers in order to be able to pass English.

I was basically told I was ridiculous and that it was only 8th grade and what should I expect. Soooo, these children will go on to do it again because they didn't learn anything and the school and their parents basically said it was no big deal.

I heart my administration for supporting me Confused

  • It's college, Lanie!  It's absolutely atrocious.  I mean, I understand that it is a surprisingly difficult subject matter for some people (philosophy).  But seriously.  DH would sit down with them and help them parse out arguments so they could write a paper.

At least one of these folks rarely/never came to class.  He chose a paper topic because he could find a decent Wikipedia article on it.

It's amazing what these students will do for a grade, too.  DH once had a student ask him if he could do extra credit.  DH said no, but come to class on Friday because there's going to be a pop quiz, and if he did well on that and the final he'd still get a B+ (which is what the student wanted).  DH *told* him there was a pop quiz.

He didn't show up for the quiz and later went to the instructor (DH was teaching the discussion section) begging for extra credit.  WTF?

  • Way to go DH. As annoying as it is, he should be proud of himself for catching them. Better they learn now than later when it could cost them a job or worse.
  • Wow, Capechick.  Way to teach them consequences, admin.

Did/could you at least notify parents?  I would make my child re-write that paper and a few more.

  • I work for a very prestigious academic publisher and even we find plagiarized ?work! ?Can you image a University prof. submitting plagiarized work. ?I hate making that call...
  • Wow.   Are these students undergrads or graduate students?

  • sadly, it is possible that some of these students didn't know they were?plagiarizing. ?i am not?justifying?what they did, but our education system is so bad right now i wouldn't be surprised. ?a lot of high schools don't teach students anything about writing papers so when they get to college they really have no clue what to do.
  • I always thought that if you plagiarized, you were going to be kicked out of school.  I haven't cheated since a spelling test in fourth grade, but I know that getting an F in a course would've taught me a lesson for sure.  I can't STAND it when people cheat.  I always told my second graders the story of cheating in fourth grade and how I never did it again after that and even told them they'd get kicked out of college if they cheated.  I wanted them to always be honest!
  • Philosophy?  Oh please tell me that it wasn't Ethics.

At the university where I was teaching, a student could get expelled for plagiarism, but not in the course I was teaching.  First year comp students are given the benefit of the doubt.

I caught one student plagiarizing and made her write a couple of pages explaining what plagiarism is and then I put it in her file.  So, if she ever gets caught again she won't be able to hide behind the "oh, I didn't know what I was doing" excuse.

  • Yeah, I realize this - which is why DH and thought "ok, just fail them once...but the next time it needs to be more severe."  And Capechick's anecdote totally illustrates that the problem starts so young and is basically condoned!

The students are undergraduates - it's a 100 level class.  Thankfully NOT an ethics class!  He's actually also grading an ethics/phil. of law class -- thankfully no plagiarists caught there!

  • This is a pretty good idea.  I wonder if they'd be able to get it into their files -- I know getting it noted on their transcript that they cheated is POSSIBLE, but it's a huge administrative pita.

  • I teach HS English and I find plagiarism all the time.  Thankfully, it hasn't been that bad this year, but it is a huge problem and it is something that I have to constantly deal with.  I tell my students up front in the beginning of the year that it is extremely easy to catch plagiarists using google, but they still do it anyway.  What I usually do, is when I find whatever webpage they used, print it off, staple it to their paper (make copies), and then write plagiarism=zero.  I then hand the paper to the student, call parents, etc.

There are some school years where it is a constant problem!

  • i am a HS teacher and this happens to me all.the.time.

my favorite plagiarizing is from sparknotes.com. ?like that isn't the first place i look, number 1, and number 2, those are HARVARD students writing the notes. ?as if i think my 10th grader writes like a harvard english student all of a sudden? ?ummmmm. ?no.

and then when you confront them, they lie. ?so i say, "do you know what such and such a word means?" ?some ridiculous word they supposedly "used" in their essay. ?and they have no idea.

pisses me the eff off. ?plagiarizing and cheating are absolutely RAMPANT at my HS.?

hmmm this is somewhat offensive. ?every single solitary english teacher that i work with teaches plagiarism. ?and all of our middle schools teach it. ?the problem is ethics. ?there needs to be an ethics class taught in all schools. ?and yeah, parents need to teach their kids ethics. ?

at my school, the board of ed president's DAUGHTER cheated in my co-workers history class by plagiarizing an ENTIRE essay, word for word, from the library of congress website. ?we found the entire essay online, and my co-worker called the parent. ?she denied the entire thing, said she saw her daughter working on the essay, and refused to even LOOK at it again. ?my co-worker was told by our principal to just grade the essay and be done with it. ?not only was the child not punished, but she got a GRADE for the essay.

i still have both a copy of her essay and the library of congress page she copied it from. ?some day i will send it to my local paper.?

Agreed. Cannot stand it when people blame teachers/schools. I, along with ALL my fellow English teachers, teach about plagiarism to every single class we teach (well, taught in my case. I recently resigned to be a sahm). Anyway, I STILL caught many students plagiarizing every year. So many of these kids just don't listen and are lazy.

I once failed all but THREE students in a 9th grade English class... for the year. No exaggeration. Thank God my administration WAS supportive.

Not one ounce of me misses the hours I spent combing papers for plagiarism and then defending/justifying the resulting failure to ignorant parents.?

  • I teach high school composition and I drill this into my students (luckily the NYT incident with Jayson Blair being taken in gave me lots to use as an example). We literally spend weeks working on how to correctly cite sources to give credit to the authors. I am hoping none of them ever sink to the level of plagiarizing in college.

i know this is late but....i am guessing by where you live that you teach in pretty suburban, middle class schools in states where there is at least adequate funding for schools. ?i went to a highly competitive HS and i had amazing teachers. and i would have?definitely?been expelled for any form of cheating at my university. ?after moving to san francisco, however, i took a few post graduate classes at the state university and they were teaching students all about how to write papers in 500 level classes. the same stuff i was taught as a freshman in HS. ?these kids had no clue. schools here are seriously under funded and they have a hard time keeping good teachers. i ?wasn't saying that all teachers/education systems suck, but the reality is that a lot do.
