Ergo or Beco Butterfly?

Has anyone tried both of these carriers on?  Preference of one over the other?  Any other tips/suggestions?  If you have one can you tell me why you like it?  Thanks!

Re: Ergo or Beco Butterfly?

  • I love our Beco 4th generation.  I got it before DD was born so before the Butterfly came out.  I read multiple reviews of people preferring it over the Ergo, though they're very similar.  And I think most people prefer the 4th generation to the Butterfly because they don't like the insert thing, though I can see that being nice with a small newborn.  It I had to do it all over again, knowing what I know now, I'd still get the exact same one.  I hope this helps -- tough decision!!! :)

  • I have an Ergo and love it. I've never tried the Beco.
  • Loading the player...
  • I've owned both now (along with several other carriers) and would choose the Beco Butterfly again.  Both are comfortable carriers, though. :)

Things I like about the Beco over the Ergo:

    • I found it easier to adjust to a comfortable, "custom" fit (I'm 5'3" and it's supposedly designed to be better at both ends of the height spectrum - short and tall - than the ergo) - it just "fit" better
    • I personally liked the built-in insert - it made it much easier for me to be able to put DS in the carrier first, then hoist him up onto my front/back securely (he was too wiggly for me to safely get him on my back alone in the ergo).  I like that there's a built-in infant insert and didn't find it to be "bulky"
    • Another nice thing about the insert - you can unbuckle the waist belt (to do things like go to the bathroom or if you need to hike up your pants b/c the carrier pushed it down - all that I've tried do this sometimes!) and DC is still securely held in the carrier - can't do this with the ergo.
    • LOVED the Beco fabrics - much "cuter" than the REI-looking Ergo
thebabywearer.com is a great online resource for getting more information about baby wearing, carriers, etc (and for finding gently used carriers - a great way to "try" something out w/o making the huge financial investment of buying new).  GL :)
