Worried about RH negative

So I am AB neg, and I know they have a shot they give you near the end of pregnancy to protect against problems. My worry though is with the loss of our twin, and accompanied bleeding. If that twin was positive I should have gotten the shot then so that my body would not reject the remaining baby. Does anyone know anything about this? I have been trying to call my Dr but she never calls back. Grrr

Re: Worried about RH negative

  • First, I am so sorry for the loss of your twin.  I'm O- and had spotting/bleeding with the loss of our triplet at 9 weeks.  My RE did have me do a Rhogam shot at that time just to be safe.  I also had it again at 28 weeks.  I do believe there is a time frame on it though, so if it's been more than 72 hours I don't know that it would be helpful to do at this point.  I could be wrong about that though - you would definitely want to discuss it with your Dr.  Keep calling!
  • I agree with pp. I am A- and have received rhogam three times during this pregnancy (2 after procedures and one at 28wks). I also had an antibody screen done before my 28 week shot to make sure I had not already developed antibodies. Def. talk to your dr.

  • Thanks guys. They promised me she would call today so we will see. it was at 9 weeks I had the bleeding problem. But if there can be a test done to see if my body has made the antibodies, that might be good.
  • I am so sorry for your loss.  :(

I am A-, and we lost a twin at about 9 weeks (but I did not have any bleeding).  My OB gave me the shot then, but said he didn't think that I really needed it.  I would definitely ask your doctor if you can have it just to be on the safe side, but my OB said that the baby was so small at that point that he did not think it would cause my body to produce antibodies.

  • A few things to add--

Do you know DH's blood type?  If he is also negative, no worries.  (You probably already thought of that.)

Also--the first exposure to positive blood is never a problem--that is the exposure that causes your body to produce antibodies.  So even if you are past the "window" or do not get it this time, as long as you get the rest on schedule you should be fine.

How are you doing? I haven't heard from you in ages!
