anyone ever claim a breast pump...

on insurance?  I was told that sometimes insurance will cover the cost of a breast pump if you have a prescription for it.  My pediatrician wrote me a script, but I'm not sure what to do next. Yes, I will call blue cross and ask, but I thought I'd ask here too.

Re: anyone ever claim a breast pump...

  • My BFF's was covered because her DS was in the NICU for a month, so her insurance covered it during that time only.

  • Yes!  For our BCBS, I just got a perscription and had to buy the pump AFTER the baby was born.  If I got it from a hospital store, thee was no paperwork, money to front, etc.  If it got it from BRU, I had to submit a claim.  We did the first, and it was the Madela PIS..worth it for us, since I didnt produce enough mild and count even pump anyway, more than an ounce at a time..would havebeen mad if I spent over $200 and couldnt use it!

  • Our old insurance covered my breast pump.  I had to get an Rx from a nurse at the hospital and then pick it up at a medical supply store.  Its worth checking on.  I got the Medela Pump In Style Advance for FREE!!!
  • I had BCBS and I had to get a prescription..then I had to go to the hospital medical supply store..they take the prescription and submit it to insurance.  (the lactation consultant at the hospital knew this work around, I would call your hospitals LCs and see if they can give you a pointer or two on how to go about it)
  • Yes, again with BCBS.  I had the pedi in the hospital write a script, and I was reimbursed 90%, as I am for all prescriptions.

  • I checked and my insurance only covers it if there's a reason why the baby can't latch and then it's a rental fee unless the issue continues past the time that rental fees become greater than purchase price.  You may check in to whether it's considered an eligible expense with a flexible spend account.
