Help he hit his head on the tile

Figured I'd ask here as I'm trying to get him to calm down from crying before I call the pedi like a freaking paranoid mom. I was playing with Mikey getting him to take some steps on his own and he was doing great and lost his balance on our tile floor (we don't have carpet in our house) and he fell. He's fallen before but never this hard. Usually I'm able to catch him but this time I wasn't fast enough.

If your child has fallen on their head what things should I be looking for to know that I should take him to the ER?

Re: Help he hit his head on the tile

  • I'm not much help, DS has hit his head quite a bit (not necessarily falling on it but ramming things as well) and has always seemed fine. If he takes awhile to calm down, or seems a little dazed I would contact the pedi.

  • I'm sure he'll be fine!

    From Babycenter.com:

It's common for babies to hit their heads when they fall, and in most cases there's nothing to worry about. If your baby loses consciousness, though, have him checked out by his doctor or by the doctor at the emergency room. Sometimes, even with a minor blow, the brain can be injured.

Also take your baby to a doctor right away if he hits his head and in the next day or two he:

?  Is vomiting. It's okay to have a bout of vomiting after a fall, but it shouldn't persist.

?  Seems unusually sleepy during the day or can't be awakened at night. Try waking your baby a couple of times the first night after his fall, just to make sure you can.

?  Seems weak or confused, or seems to have problems with coordination, vision, or verbal communication.

  • Thanks ladies. I was able to get him to calm down pretty quickly and he's back to his old self already. Phewwwwww that was scary! He's hit his head before but never banged it that hard.
  • At the daycare we always checked their eyes to make sure their pupils were not dilated - we did this every 10 minutes and then we made sure they were awake and playing at least 45 minutes before they went to sleep.  Is there a knot on his head?  A knot is usually a good sign!  That means the swelling is going out and not in!  Brightning gave a good list too!  I would call your pedi but I don't think you need to take him to the ER!

I can't really tell if there is a knot because he fell on the back of his head, so of course its covered by his hair. Don't really feel anything back there either. Now that he's calm I can call the pedi.
