When to switch nipples?

I pump and supplement with formula on a 2:1 ratio. I was wondering when the experienced moms switched nipples to the faster flow. It takes DD about 15-30 minutes to finish a 4.5-5 oz bottle depending on her appetite. I tried the faster nipples and she finished in less than 5 minutes and was extremely gassy after one feeding. I'm using Playtex Drop-ins and all they have is slow or fast (which seems to be super fast) and Born Free level 2 which is still fast but not as fast as Playtex. Any advice? Thank you as always!!

well the general rule is that if you are not breast feeding directly then you don't have to worry about the whole flow speed...if you are then slow is the way to go. I switched nipples once she started getting frustrated!! I think 15-30 min for a bottle fed baby is way long...if not breastfeeding directly I repeat. if breastfeeding it should take the same amount of time BF does. anyway hope that helps. go with the nipple that she is comfy with after.

Interesting... I had not even thought about this, and the level 2 nipples are just sitting in my pantry. Sometimes he takes so long in the middle of the night or even during the day that I fall asleep feeding him. He is only 3 weeks old. Is it too early to switch to the level 2 nipple?

Around 3 months is a good time to switch. If it takes more than 15 minutes to eat a bottle, it's probably time to switch. Karen~ I wouldn't neccessarily switch your baby just yet though, he is still pretty young. I think I switched Zoe's around 10 weeks.

Nadia also takes forever to finish a bottle... like 20-30 minutes! I too have fallen asleep!!!

I have in my pantry medium flow nippes for the playtex drop-ins...they do sell them, BPA free as well.  FYI.
