Do you let DC play with light switches?

On her tippy toes DD can turn our light switches off but not on. Sometimes I move a little stool next to the switches so she can turn the lights on and off to her heart's content. She loves figuring out which switch operates which light. Am I committing some sort of no-no by letting her do this?

  • I don't think so, but I'm pretty lax on what DD plays with. I would probably let DD if she could reach, eventually she'll have to learn to turn lights on and off when entering & exiting a room, so to me it's not a big deal!

  • Ours are higher, or your daughter is really tall! ;)

but on dd's changing table there is a light switch next to her head. When I change her I let her flick the switch on and off as much as she pleases. ?

  • DD loves to do this in our living room.  Our glider is right next to the light switch so she climbs up there and turns them off/on to her hearts content.  I think it's harmless...she's only doing it to figure out the whole cause/effect scenerio..so in my mind there's no harm in it (besides maybe the electric bill..lol) :)
  • We even hold DD and let her turn the lights on or off when we enter/exit a room.  There's nothing wrong with it to me.  We say on and off and talk about the lights.  The only problem being is that she always wants to do it :).

That's why I put the little stool by the switch! But I think the light switches in this house are really low. DD is only 31" and can reach them.

  • Lucy is a big light-switch flipper. She just adores them, and it keeps her busy so I just don't care! She has several stools and chairs conveniently located by all of her favorites light switches, so she stays very busy!

  • My son is very tall and has been able to reach the lights for awhile.  At first I thought it was cute.  Then it became annoying.  Now he is old enough to not be obsessed with it and only turns them on when he needs to.

He is super sweet and turns on lights for me when I go to the laundry room, even if I don't ask him.

  • I let DD flip them on or off, whichever we need.  I don't let her play with them though.  I have to pick her up for her to reach them.
