2nd Trimester

i am just sobbing....

I had someone come and give me a quote for our kitchen...lets just say it NEEDS to be done.  He gave me the wqote and I literally just stared at the number trying not to cry when he was there.  The second he left I just burst into tears.  We need to get this done so bad but there is NO way we can afford it....let me just say it was $13,000 more than I was anticipating

  • Get some more quotes!!! Never accept the first one!
  • Loading the player...
  • can you get another quote? Do some of the work yourself (as in family/DH)?
  • Definitely do some comparing and get multiple quotes.  You might be surprised how much cheaper it can be dome!

  • can your man and one of his buddies do the work themselves?  also, get a couple more quotes and then make them compete... you could also try a loan from the bank... good luck!
  • there were certain things we were going to do ourselves, i.e. demolition and some other stuff that my stepdad could do...but when I mentioned certain things it seemed like even if we did some of that, the difference wasn't that much.  It is just so overwhelming!
  • I agree with everyone else...try to do as much DIY as possible and get some more quotes to compare
  • Ugh. I know how hard that first quote can hit you, and the next, and the next. Financially we're all in a rut, and I'm sorry to hear that this is something you have to do now. Just take a few deep breaths whenever you think about it and remember that it will all work out in the end. You will find a solution. This is just another obstacle. Maybe see if DH can handle this one on his own, as far as dealing with quotes and contractors - you don't need the added stress.

Hope it works out with the least amount of problems and moolah! ?

  • It's definitely overwhelming, but hang in there!  My mom's in the process of redoing her kitchen and she's found some great deals.  She found a custom cabinet maker in Craigslist that's super cheap, and I know a lot of people sell building supplies on that website, too.  Just do a lot of checking around.
  • Two words: The Amish.  Their work is twice as good and half the price.
  • Don't get discouraged...just keep looking. We did our kitchen over last spring and our first 2 quotes were twice as much as we wanted to spend.

We ended up knocking down 2 walls, ripping out all of the kitchen cabinets, putting new wood flooring on the first floor, quartz countertops, added an island, s/s appliances, new lighting and have a dream kitchen. We did the whole thing for $12,000. Granted we did the demo, hung the cabinets and put the flooring in ourselves, but it is doable. We ended up going to Lowe's for cabinets, countertops, appliances and flooring. Home Depot tried to meet their price, but couldn't.
