Washington Babies

unsure job security-long

Good Afternoon ladies!

So here's some background: i work for what used to be a large size commercial construction company, as the VP's assistant. We recently lost some work and now have only one project on the books for 2009...things arent looking good. Today they started talking lay-offs. I'm confident I'd be one of the last to go and am now praying they keep me until the baby comes in July.

Any advice on a few of my concerns:

who will hire a pregnant women...due in the height of summer wanting to take 10-12 weeks off (obvously this may have to change but i'd love to have three months home with the baby).

our financial plan doesnt have us ready for me to work part time until about April...but there are a few part time jobs i found online that look to be great. Do I just pray great things are out there when i'm actually ready?

We're looking at a lease to own house on Friday night that we're really excited about, but are we silly to jump into something that we may not be able to afford when it comes times to buy in a few years?

thoughts, encouragment, prayers, job ideas...i'll take them all! I know i dont post much but I'll truly value anything you gals can give.

Stay Warm if snow falls! :)

  • well if your laid off then you can collect unemployment.  I was laid off 4 months before I was due and was able to collect.  Also there are extensions in unemployment right now so if money runs out it can be extended.  Hopefully they won't lay you off until closer to your due date but count on 12-20 weeks of unemployment at the least.  Then you could take of time and start looking for jobs as you get ready to go back to work.

  • What tfarabians said and I'd be nervous about taking on a house at this point. Prices are dropping. Are you locking in a price now? A low interest rate now?
  • thanks for the unemployment info. I'm definatly trying to keep a positive attitude i'm just really concerned about finding a new job while pregnant.

the house would be a rental until we bought in a few years, but yes, we are being careful to get all the detials (total cost of home and intrest rate) now so we can better prepare.

    thanks ladies!
