2nd Trimester

Baby Budgeting Class (Important, Long)!

This class is offered for military members and military spouses to help you prepare for your child.  It's pretty cool, they do it regardless of how many kids you have.

Did you know that to raise a child from birth to age 17 (not including college) it costs over $184,000?

Holy moly!

They told us to assume we would spend more than $50 a month on clothing, and for food for a child under one year old would cost, on average, $107!!

So, if you haven't started saving (like me), now's a good time to make that happen!  They talk a lot about making sure your finances are under control since now you have to take care of a living, breathing child.

Also, if you're in the military (or you're a spouse) you shuld check this class out bacause at the end of the class they give you a free layette, which had like 2 crib sheets, a huge pack of onesies, footed pjs, receiving blankets, bibs, socks, a hand knitted sweater, and hat, plus a ton of information on food programs and whatever else!  I know it's offered in Charleston at both the Navy and Air Force base, look into it in your area!

  • I would have thought it cost a lot more to raise a kid to age 17.

Also, the cost for food for a kid under 1 year seems high.  I guess they're counting on mother's using formula instead of BFing.

  • I spend about $100 a week on groceries and have a 12 year old boy.  Sometimes I spend more.  Trust me, tweens are NOT cheap!
  • 184,000 has got to be low.  That breaks down to only $10,823.00 per year.  Our day care for the first year is going to cost almost double that....and that's for a middle of the road day care center in our area.

I wish they offered a class like that for non-military.

  • Wow -  a lot of those numbers seem high! We definitely didn't spend $50 a month on clothes - more like $50 every three months or so. And we sure didn't spend that much on food, but I breastfed and we made our own baby food.
