who's had real sushi??

I struggled with this my last pregnancy too, but I'm wondering who has had "real" sushi, with raw fish.  I have made it halfway through this pregnancy without having any, but I have REALLY been craving it.  If other people have had it, I just MAY consider it.  I know it would probably be just fine, but then I know I will probably feel guilty after.  Is it worth it?

Re: who's had real sushi??

  • Humm. perhaps you could mix some "cooked" sushi in with your few treats.

I would only go to a TOP of the line place too, where you know the fish is fresh....I think the main issue here is you getting really sick from it.

  • I have! I went to a really reputable place- like I always do- and I had rolls and some sashimi. I've had it 3x so far- all things in moderation.

Don't feel guilty- sushi is really good for you, and as my midwife pointed out, "There are plenty of Japanese people in the world, and they had to get here somehow." If you want to ease your mind a little, just avoid the high-mercury content fish.
  • I have heard many contradicting stories about this on the bump. There are people who go out and eat sushi without even a second thought. Then there are people who are dead set against it. I think that if you use the moderation rule you should be fine. I would not go to a place that doesn't specialize in sushi though and I wouldn't get anything rare that not alot of people eat, who knows how long it's been sitting in the coolers. I have gone to eat sushi but not the really raw fish. I had smoked salmon, but I guess that is just as bad mainly due to the fact that is was prepared and cut and served right along with all the other raw sushi.

I was eating raw sushi every Friday for a month and a half before I realized I was pregnant and my baby is most certainly heathy and happy according to the Dr. I think it is all what you want to take a chance on. There is always that one little chance something could happen but then again it might not ever happen. That is the decision you have to make. To chance it or not to chance it...

  • I haven't gone raw, though I really think it would be ok, as most US sushi-grade fish has been flash frozen along the way. It's one of the things I was sure I would do before I became pregnant, but once I was, it felt funny. Definitely out of character for me.

I think my saving grace has been the cold weather... I tend to really crave sushi in the summer. That said, I have had eel, shrimp and tempura rolls a few times, just to get a fix. I felt like such a sushi newbie, ordering all 'cooked' stuff... oh well! It still tasted good.

  • I've been craving it SO BAD and DH has turned into the pregnancy food police - won't let me near it.  I've had a veggie roll a few times and it briefly satisfies my craving but I want more!  The place we frequent has never made us ill and I don't plan to eat a ton, but I know there are risks.  Although honestly I think my commute to work everyday is a much higher risk for injury than a piece of sushi.

My birthday is coming up and I'm hoping I'll be able to convince him by then.

  • Meh, if you go to a good sushi place, I think it's fine, especially if you were eating it before you got pregnant.

Our fav sushi place is the best in town, and we have NEVER had questionable fish there, so I trust it.  Plus, the owner is kind of psychotic about the quality of his fish, so...I don't worry.

  • I was craving sushi, hard core, for a few weeks.  At one point I asked my dr if it was ok to have a little raw and she said yes.  So, I did.  I only had about half of a spicy tuna roll with my cooked sushi and it helped the craving.  I thought it was worth it.  It was a nice restaurant and I did not feel guilty.
  • I eat real sushi but that doesnt mean it has to be raw. I used to eat a ton of salmon and tuna but now I just order rolls that are cooked  ...at very reputable restaurants. I also have them roll uncooked rolls on a seperate space to avoid cross contamination.

It might not be harmful to you.. but some of the things can be harmful to the baby...I would rather be safe than sorry.

  • I have, here and there. But I get it from a really good place, and avoid the types of fish that have high mercury levels (tuna and a few others).

  • I had real sushi last weekend!!! And then I broke out in hives all over my body from thighs up to ears! Maybe because I am not a regular sushi eater but hey -- not fun to say the least.
  • It's fine. Like pp's have said just go somewhere good and avoid the high mercury fish. My ob said his wife ate it about twice a month for the last few months of both her pregnancies..everything in moderation
  • I miss sushi so much!!! I've been staying away from it since I found out because of stuff I read in a book... I might just have to go get a little soon though... it's just sooooo tasty!!!
  • I haven't yet but I plan on it very, very soon!!  Just haven't gotten around to going out to a nice dinner :)  I think the odds of getting contaminated sushi is the same as getting contaminated ANYTHING, ya know??  I think the same thing w/ listeria, so basically I eat whatever I want (ugh, excluding the amount of alcohol I want haha).
  • I have avoided uncooked sushi/sashimi.. but have all the cooked sushi I want.

  • Just ask if your restaurant freezes the fish first (most do). This won't kill any bacteria in the fish, but it will kill any parasites. It is important NOT to get a parasite during pregnancy because your baby is essentially a "parasite" (as cruel as that sounds) so you won't be able to treat the parasite without hurting the baby.

There might be other concerns, but I think parasites are the main problem with raw foods.?

  • I did.

I figured that if Japanese women are encouraged to eat MORE sushi when they are pregnant it can't be *too* bad of an idea.

But I went to the top of the line, expensive sushi place because I was *just* that paranoid about it.

  • I've had it a couple of times. Soooo yummy. I've been eating raw fish since I could walk though; so I felt a little more safe to be honest. Just make sure you go to a good place just in case.

  • ME! I had a whole plate of sashimi the week before Thanksgiving and I told my doc about it and didn't seem phased. He said, "And you didn't get sick and it was from a reputable place so it's fine. Just don't do it every night"
