Do you SAH and pump?

With my first DD, I started pumping and freezing b/c I was planning on going back to work when she was 10 months old.

I am not going back to work until DD#2 is almost a year. Yet, I continue to pump and freeze. I have over 100oz in the freezer that will probably go bad before I can use it.

Hmmm, I need to quit pumping, right? What do you do in morning when you are so full if you don't pump?

Re: Do you SAH and pump?

  • No way!  I despised pumping.  I did it some, but not enough to really have a stash of any sort in the freezer.  I guess because I didn't really pump in the mornings I never got extremely full...   I mean I was full, but not painfully so.  Does that make sense?
  • I do not pump!!!  My body has adjusted to DD's needs and I am rarely full.

  • In your case I would not pump any more. I worked 2 days a week from 6 months on and needed bm for those 2 days so I had to pump.  I started to pump at 5 weeks to get a supply of frozen milk.  We also needed bm for our date night every Friday night so my il's could feed her but your supply is more than enough for you to go out if you wanted to!

  • I very rarely pumped. I hated it and I didn't want to have an over supply. SIL pumps all the time and she stays at home. No flames or anything, but I don't really understand the purpose.

  • In the beginning I pumped to get a freezer stash, after I had that, I just pumped at night before I went to bed.  I didn't nurse DS to sleep, DH gave DS a bottle of EBM so I just had to pump enough for that.
  • I did, for a couple of months (more like 6), and it was nice, because I had a good supply for the nights I'd want to have some wine (more than 1-2 :) for dinner, etc.

Since it lasts for awhile, I liked having some on hand for emergencies (like the funeral I had to go to away from DS, etc...)

But, ONLY once a day, if that.

  • I pump and SAH.  I mainly did it get my supply back up after I had to go back into the hospital, but now I do it so MH can feed DS bottles at night.  Or when I go out and aren't home when B's hungry.

It's nice having a stash in case I want to go out for an afternoon.  Or in case my supply nosedives and I still want him to have some BM later on.

But I would pump less and less frequently to get your supply under control.

  • I never "had" to pump, because I worked from home, but I did anyway because I needed to have DH do at least one feeding for my sanity.  He would do the last feeding of the night (that took an hour sometimes when she was small) and I'd just pump for 20 minutes and go to bed.  It really helped, and then she always took a bottle when I needed her to because she was used to it.

  • I pump twice a day- before I go to bed and when I wake up in the morning. I feel like I can't breathe when I wake up.  *knock wood* DD has been STTN for about three weeks now.

I guess I should cut out the nighttime pumping? That might make mornings really miserable

  • I pump in the mornings.  I mainly do it so that I know I have enough if we want a night out, or to give her a bottle if we go somewhere.  I don't have a huge stash, but I have enough for a couple days which is good since they are staying w/my parents Saturday night.

  • I pumped and then I went on a trip and left DD with my mother.  She used up most of it while DH and I went out and had a good time for a long weekend.
  • I pumped. Really I never saw why people thought it was hard. I was lucky that I was never really relying on getting x amount every single day (because DS wasn't taking a bottle) but I still saw ups and downs in supply at times and built a stash almost without thinking about it. I was a SAHM for the first 18 months except for 3 months when I went back to work in the middle.

I think having some sort of stash is probably a good idea even for SAHMs. You don't know if you're going to get sick and have a supply drop, you may have to take medication that makes bm unsafe. If you have no options you'll end up switching to FF in those cases before you wanted to. On the other hand I think pumping from day 1 is crazy whether you're SAH or not. You need to learn how to BF before you even think about pumping imho (and no I can't think of more than VERY extreme reasons to EP).?
