Well I am at home (45 min from the hospital) and my mom just called and said my dads cardiac index is low It needs to be bw 2.6 and 4.2 and its currently at 1.7. My mom asked if this was "common" or not. The nurse just says its different for everyone. ugh! Okay great, but is this something serious or something that is usually fixed.
Oh Honey! I am sorry! I will pray it goes up! I hope you find your answer. My sis works at the hospital but is not home right now - not sure if it is something she would know but I will try to keep calling.
We usually accept a CI (cardiac index) of 2.0. But yes 1.7 is low. It also depends on how long it stays low. It can fluctuate but you would be concerned if it is consistently below 2.
He has only been out of surgery a few hours so he is still probably warming up and fluids are shifting in his body. He may be low on fluid due to the surgery (extremely common) or his vessels may be very constricted and he would need something to dilate them. Both of these things are really common fresh out of surgery and just take some time and adusting of things.
The nurse probably doesn't want your mom to be concerned because she is doing things to fix the index. I usually don't even tell my families what the index should be because they don't understand everything involved.
Our goal is to have the patient off the vent in 6 hours. But that varies on a lot of things. Does he smoke or have asthma? It will also depend on how awake he is. He needs to be pretty awake and breathing "on his own" before they with take the tube out. Also if they are concerned about his cardiac index they may leave the tube in until they fix that.
Thank you greta&tess!!! I appreciate your answers!
He is still on the vent. They tried to take him of f but his blood pressure got high and a few other things didn't go right, so it sounds like they will try to get him off of it tomorrow.
Re: Any ICU nurses on?
